Am I expecting too much from the carpenter I hired?

Wow, that is an absolute disgrace. So charged for 3 days, rushed the job to a sub par quality in a day, made out it is acceptable and then wanted paid in cash with no invoice. Obliterate him in any review and report to trading standards.

He had all the time in the world to make that a pristine job, that's the whole point, you pay more for better quality. Anyone could bodge that out in half a day.

You've raised your issues with the job:

Ask him to come back and finish the job properly.
If no, get a quote on how much it will cost to do it how you wanted, ask him to refund that amount.

If it's a no to the above, i would 100% leave a negative review and report to Trading Standards - it's not like you would ever use him again.

You should have made it clear and agreed that you were paying him an hourly rate and paid accordingly.

I hate using trades unless I really really have to.

In those occurrences I research as much as I can to be knowledgeable in the subject so as not to be ripped off, but this backfires - either the trades see you as a know-it-all or as a not-so-easy mark - and don't come back. That's fine by me. The ones that have passion and pride in their work and like the fact that you are interested in what they do, are extremely rare these days.

If you'd paid £80 for that then it <might> be reasonable, but £800?!

That "workmanship" is ****.

The first picture he's cut the angle completely wrong.

The second picture - you could park a bus in those gaps on the corner section.

This is exactly why I DIY 90% of jobs around the house, the only things I don't touch are gas and major electrical works; yes it might take me a bit longer to do, but at least I know it will be done to a standard I'm happy with.
