Am I expecting too much?

I currently have a q6600 clocked to 3ghz (333x9), 2gb ballistix and a HIS 3870x2 ...

Installed COD4, put all gfx settings to high, textures to extra, resolution to 1440x900.
Whilst playing, Indoor environments run very smooth at over 100fps a lot of the time, sometimes around 60fps. However when I'm outside, in fields, and even just looking out of windows, my fps can drop below 50, even as low as 20/25.
For example the scene where you defend the tank, it was never really above 30fps iirc.

This really does seem strange to me, but maybe it's normal, am I expecting too much from the card?

What kind of results is everybody else getting from their systems?

i'll run a FRAPS timedemo of the demo mission (hopefully that's the same one you're talking about) and get back to you

hmm, that does seem strange. I've got 2 HD3850's in crossfire, so perforamnce should be very similar (same rez/settings btw) and I don't remember it ever being that sluggish.

got a pretty consistent 40 FPS... dropped to like 25 in heavy scenes (around the part where you have to fight off the chaps wanting to take out the tank), but max was i think like 50 in an indoor scene with nothing going on; maybe higher

I havent played the single player but in multi mine stays at about 70fps I think it is, 8800 GTS 512mb running max gfx at 1600x1200. I would have thought your card would handle it fine.

use a logging tool like Rivatuner to see if you clocks are changing while ingame.
