Im on the verge of loosing my Custom Build virginity and im bricking it that im making the right choice so looking for some pre-purchase assurance or better advice

Ok my current spec is
Cosmos S coolermaster case.
Corsair Gold Series AX850 psu
Asus P5w DHDeluxe mobo.
Q6600 quad running at 3ghz with arctic 7 cooler
2gb corsair 800mhz ram,
x1900xt 512mb gfx card with accelero 2 cooler
Creative labs xfi sound card

Gaming wise im mad for TF2 which is cpu heavy, im also enjoying Crysis, total shogun 2 and will probs get into the cod and bf3 titles too soon enough.

Other apps ill use are for doing video converions/encoding although gaming is my priority.


Ok heres whats sitting in checkout ready for purchase and what ill keep from my old rig above

Cosmos S case (from rig above)
Corsair Gold Series AX850 (from rig above)
**NEW components**
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Intel Z68 (REV B3) Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express 3 Motherboard
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz retail version
Thermalright Silver Arrow cooler for overclock in future
Crucial m4 64GB SSD (ill get more storage later)
G-skill Ripjaws X ram....2 x 4gb ( I want the blue ones to match colours on mobo but not sure which timings/model to get, Also they are only 40mm high so will clear the CPU cooler)
So at the moment Its gonna cost me around £600
I still need a gfx card but was holding out as the 7000 series is coming out so hopefully the 69xx will drop

I have the option of overclocked motherboard bundles with cpu, ram, cooler and mobo for much cheaper than the components im using......Am I being overkill with my build in a way that i would not see any real time benefit or would I be better just getting a pre-overclocked rig and with the money i save put it towards a gfx card

Welcome to the forums.

Build looks good to me, you should be able to overclock that CPU quite high on that board. If possible I would maybe go for the 128Gb M4 if funds can stretch that far.
I am sure if you get stuck with the build just ask, plenty of people on here willing to help out.
 
You should be able to reuse your Harddrive unless it is IDE and there is no legacy support.
The 128gb is good idea if you can afford to.
But the 64gb will basically get you windows 7, battlefield 3 and 10-15gig or so of your choice.


The noctua is a monstrous cooler and the new i series chips cool much better so you might find it worthwhile getting a 'gelid tranquilo' as it is cheaper and more than capable of a decent OC.

You could also save a little on an OEM cpu. You are buying a cooler so there is no point paying for two.
 
your right about the ssd, I should go for the 128

What Ripjaws x memory should I go for, this is the colour/deisgn i want to keep in colour co-ord with the mobo (sad eh) ....lol

There is so many so not really fully up to speed on timings yet as im still learning the trade

My thought on the noctua was that its probally the best air cooler out there at the moment and although maybe overkill those extra less degrees over the years could pay dividends in chip lifespan ( thats my therory anyway ) :)

FYI, a bit of Googling suggests that there's a problem fitting the Noctua NH-D14 in the Cosmos S.

The only way to possibly do it is to remove the side panel fan.

It would seem you're restricted to CPU coolers 145mm tall with the side panel fan fitted.

Ok im changing cooler to the Thermalright Silver Arrow, the notcua is fugly tbh
I did then think about the BEquiet pro but ill sacrifice noise for temps and the cooler does look 'cool' too :D

This is mentally exhausting, its a lot of money to me so want it to be perfect
 
As long as the SA fits in the case present and future, then that's a fine cooler.

For the motherboard, you have plenty of choices, I rock a Extreme4 Gen3 and have no issues, similar to the Asus motherboard you listed. Not sure what's the deal with the Gigabytes with respect to Gen3, afaik, it is gen3 compatible on the first PCIE slot (x32). Then again, you will need a IvyBridge to make use of that.

For the memory, I also use the kingstons with no issues, but I do need a bump in voltage to get over 1600Mhz, which frankly I don't care about. The Corsair Vengeance Low Profile would be another choice, but it's expensive, however it seems better at lower voltages.
