I live in Stevenage Herts and 'Be' are in our exchange now, trouble is all the speed tests I do on my BT phone number (currently with NTL 10meg) say the max I can get is 5.5mbps I have also tried my mums number and brother and a shop next door to the exchange on BT number and max speed is 6mbps?

So my question is as above, will my home town ALWAYS have low ADSL speeds??

Yes and no..

5.5mb isnt that low really!

The 5.5mb BT figure would be based on the BTMax product adsl ie upto 8mb. The be product would be adsl2 which is upto 24mb so you would get more than 5.5 but im not sure how much. Also that orginal 5.5mb figure is more a guess as with dsl what speed you get is depending on the distance/quality of the line.

Ah I so, in that case I may call 'Be' and see what they think approx speed would be!

BT were very confusing to talk to on the phone, everyone seemed to have a different answer/explination when I called in the week, one even said 5.5mbps would be the max anyone could get in my town...lol I stopped listening to her at that point!

If I can get close to 10mbps on 'Be' then I'm off, although people do say cable is a more stable platform than ADSL? Hmmmmm ....thanks for the reply ste_bla ;)

NTL Cable will always be at the same, fixed speed. You get what you pay for. :)

ADSL speeds depend on your distance from the BT Exchange and the state of the cables.

Yeah I understand the distance etc for ADSL, and I also know people with NTL 4meg and they don't get full bandwidth so thats not totally true!!

Will call 'Be' tomorrow :)

Looking at the diagram in the FAQ:

Looks like you wouldnt get any increase with the adsl2 on the line, also no one in your street/local area should get more than that due to line length however saying the whole town is a bit extreme/lie

Cable can be more stable however with dsl you have more range of ISPs + pricepoints

Just remeber you have to pay another £11 for line rental
