Am I missing something here?

So all the benchmarks of late between the 260 and the 4870 show Crysis running high/very high graphics and 2xaa on a decent res chugging quite bad, usually 30fps at most. http://www.guru3d.com/article/top-10-games-with-radeon-4870-1-gb--geforce-gtx-260-core-216-test/7

I was under the impression that only some kind of pixie powered setup and graphics card was going to run crysis nicely. Imagine my surprise, when my mate showed me his 8800GTX running Crysis on Very High, 16xAA and getting a solid 30FPS.

Am I missing something in these GPU benchmarks? My mate is only using a Q6600 @2.8, 4gb RAM and the 8800GTX and is keeping up with the 4870s and 260s with way better rigs. Surely that's not right?

That would be beacause he isn't running it at 16AA, as the game only does 8AA iirc. Next up even without AA a 8800GTX can only just manage to play it at high at 1280x1024.

Your mate lied.

Unless it can be proven, tell him he's lying! Pics with bread would be needed for the setup and a vid of him playing it.

Sure it wasnt a GTX280? They sound almost the same...

I think it's obvious that your mate hasn't acually got AA on, he just thinks he does. Crysis is pretty good when it comes to smoothing the edges of polygons even without hardware assisted AA, at least I think so, especially compared to other games.

Its not right, far from it infact. My other system has a 8800 GTX and i know for a fact i can't get anywhere near 30 fps in very high without AA. It's my guess he's running at 640X480 lol

I've seen it. Would it make a difference that it's at 1440x900 res?

Edit. My thoughts were the same as all yours; when he told me that it could do it, I basically laughed out loud.

It wouldn't get a solid 30 at that res with 16xAA either, wouldn't at any res, no card would, if you could slap 4x GTX 280's in Quadfire even they wouldn't manage it, plus i don't think Crysis can do 16x, 8x is the highest, which still no cards could manage at a solid 30 maxed out. :p

He could be using a custom tweaked config file with small draw distances and low LOD but even then it still would not do 30FPS with 16xAA. On my old 8800GTX I found regardless of res almost any game (with the exception of Half Life2 engine games) would not run well with 16xAA even at low res.

Are you sure he's got an 8800GTX? That's just not something you'd never expect from an 8800GTX.

I promise you that he has an 8800GTX. It's a Q6600 OC'd to 2.6/2.8 (It's unstable because of stock fan), 4GB of unspecified RAM (He bought a pre-build), an average mobo and his 8800GTX is slightly overclocked.

I know some people are sceptical, but i'm just as shocked as anyone else.

Get him to run the benchmark, and post the results.
