Am I missing something?

Drinks oil like theirs no tomorrow, and MPG leaves a lot to be desired. Claimed economy figure is around 26mpg, so you can be sure to see a lot lower figures than that. Perfromance is there, but the engine has to be revved all the way, hence the cruddy fuel economy.

20mpg on a run and a litre of £15 oil every other fillup.

Then a plastic-fantastic interior to go with it.

Great.

This is strange coming from you - usually you talk about the long term running of a car, rather than the short term aspects you are going on about here.

The above example isnt the best to be honest - you can get 04/05 RX8's with full leather etc for around £6-7k now which IS a fantastic bargain if you are prepared for the little things that are different from owning a car with a "normal" engine.

First point - It's not £15 of oil every other fill up. Most users top up with around a litre of oil every 2-3000 miles - which to be honest isnt really all that much in the grand scheme of things is it?

20mpg on a run is around right though, maybe 24-26 if youre being careful. However, it doesnt really even drop that much if youre using it around town, so its a good rough average figure.

The interior is actually decent enough when you sit in it, however its pretty typically japanese in style. Functional.

Servicing costs from Mazda are suprisingly cheap, road tax isnt that bad with models of this age and general consumables are fine also.

The way it drives isnt to everyones tastes granted, but its a lot of fun when driven hard - the way its supposed to.

For what it is, I think they are a bargain, it's general reputation is making them ridiculously cheap. Exaggerating the running costs seems quite common, especially the oil issue.

I have heard 1 litre every 2k which isn't that bad in all honesty. Yes, MPG is an issue, but it is not the type of of car you put high mileage on, that's what a 5 Series is for. If I bough one it would get 5k a year.

I would not make a blanket statement saying it is good/bad, more it deepends on your situation and attitude. If you want a fun great handling car that is reasonably modern and not cost a fortune to buy and run, you could do much worse. In saying that, i am looking at the MX-5 as well lol.

It seems to have got a similar rep to the RX-7 and mainly from people that don't own or use one.

As for MPG, what are you using the car for? If an every day, city driving only commute I wouldn't recommend them though you can use them. Just be aware rotaries do like a good foot to the floor thrash every week :) Not that you'd need an excuse :)

I don't think they're that bad. Apart from the obvious fuel consumption insanity, and the fact that the car you end up with might guzzle oil (or it may not), then they're not to bad a proposition. Well not too bad if you don't do many miles.

A better car of similar (read better) ilk is the 350Z, but it is more ££££ to buy one.

When I test drove a few RX8s I thought that there must've been a petrol leak as I've never seen a car drink petrol as such an alarming rate. My 3.2 TT is like a Bluemotion in comparison.

I literally used 1/4 tank of fuel in about 15 mins in the RX8, it was crazy.

The only thing I liked about the RX8 was the stereo, which for the decent one was a costed upgrade.

I only thing I dislike about the RX8 is the engine, would have been a much nicer car if it had a little I6/V6 under there :D

I don't miss the point, yes I know you cant have a piston "RX", but given how I like everything about the car except for the engine ...

Previous V6 mazda's have never held a candle to their rotary engined counterparts.

The RX-8 is a good car and provided you are aware of the running costs and give the engine a bit more mechanical sympathy you can end up with a bargain.

You're saying that a V6 would be better than the rotary engine yet you have no grounds for that assumption better than 'there's been some good v6 and |4 engines'.

A revvy engine suits the RX-8. A V6 would turn from a sporty coupe into more of a GT car. Unfortunately what you think would be good and what is good are two different things.
