Hi would like some advice, want to get back into PC gaming, at the moment do not have a gaming PC, do all my gaming on the xbox.

Really would like a high end gaming machine, am seriously considering ordering a system, 2500k CPU. Z68 board, SSD, etc.

I want the best money can buy so looking at a ATI 6990 HD, total cost is £1500, (£500 for the card alone)

Am I crazy to do this with the latest cards around the corner? or will the 6990 still be able to hold its own?

Hi there,

The thing to bear in mind that substantially faster 28nm process graphics cards will be arriving in January and are expected to be a good deal faster than existing 40nm graphics cards.

Therefore I wouldn't suggest spending £500 on a big, hot, loud 40nm dual GPU graphics card like the HD 6990 now - when a single GPU card that is just as fast, is cheaper, quieter and cooler (which the HD 7970 is expected to be) is likely to arrive in around a months time.

Instead I would suggest going for a good value 40nm card now (like a HD 6950 2GB) and then you can buy a top-end 28nm graphics card next year when the dust has settled and both Nvidia and AMD have released there cards. This means you get the best possible card in the long run and you have a solid card running your system up until you jump over to 28nm (at which point you can sell on the 40nm card).
