Am I right in thinking this is how voluntary excess works?

If I had an excess of £500 on my policy and I made a claim of £350, I'd have to pay the £350 myself? And if I a claim I made totalled £1500, I'd have to pay the first £500 of that?

Cheers.

Dont forget there'll probably be a compulsory excess on your policy as well which you would add the voluntary excess to to find the total excess figure.

My total excess is £750! Meh, as long as it keeps my premiums down I'll put the excess to as high as possible and just drive carefully.

That caught me out on my policy

£300 voluntary excess but hidden in the small print was a £400 compulsory excess. Ouch!

how on earth was that in the small print? you should have been asking what the excess was before even agreeing to it!

I chose the excess and bought the policy (I chose the excess as £300)

When I received the papers there was also a compulsory excess as well. At the time it didn't bother me as I didn't think I'd need to claim but unfortunately I did

If the fault is 100% for the third party then I believe that you don't pay the excess

I believe that you pay the excess to get the car repaired if the fault is disputed then you receive a refund for the excess paid when the fault is determined to be the third party and your insurer recovers their costs

Well basically I got knocked off in October, my insurance rang me the other day saying my no claims has been restored, no counter claim has been made and they've accepted all liability, my insurance aren't paying a penny because I'm TPFT. My insurance have started making arrangements for an inspector to come and see my bike and sort it out.

So I shouldn't expect to pay any excess seeing as the third party are paying for all of it? My insurance are apparently no longer involved past this point unless a counter claim is made, which I don't expect. It was 8 months ago and the last 8 months have just been his insurance company refusing to pick up the phone, sticking their fingers in their ears and saying lalalalallala until the last thirty seconds of every legal deadline given to them

You shouldn't have to pay any excess. It's why everyone has to have at least TPFT. Means his insurance company will pay you all the money for your repair/replace, while he has to pay his excess to the insurance company.

Why shouldnt you? Until the claim is sorted the other party wont pay you anything. So you pay yourself then it gets claimed back (by your insurance) and you get it back.
that is how it has happened the few times i've been hit
