If a 1080p monitor can upscale to 4k, it will only do it at 60hz and not the highest the monitor supports?

So yesterday i purchased an AOC 27G4HRE which is a 1080p 200hz monitor, but to my surprise, when i connected my ps5 to it, the display automatically upscaled to 4k which i didnt even realise it could do or any non 4k gaming monitor in that sense and i do have a normal 4k 60hz monitor.

However i noticed that the ps5 will run 120hz only in the native 1080p which makes sense obviously and this was using the hdmi cable that came with the monitor, but because it upscaled, i was curious whether a particular cable could bypass it to run 120hz 4k or 60hz is the limit because its not a native 4k screen?

A 1080p monitor can't upscale to 4k as it's 1080p.

I think you mean supersampling where it renders at 4k and downsamples it so you get better anti aliasing. The output to the TV is 1080p, but it's doing all the work to render it at 4k. The lower FPS is prob because it can't render 4k any faster. I would prob turn off the supersampling and enjoy the extra FPS, but it's going to be personal preference.

Thanks for reply.

To be fair, i had forgotten all the other terminologies, but given i didnt think 1080p could upscale, then you'd be right by saying supersampling. Ive never had this experience with a gaming monitor before, so its all new to me. I did notice when connected to the ps5, that it will either display 4k signal in the settings or switch to 1080p 120hz, though that was more noticeable with Fortnite.

Connecting to the console i dont see options to disable supersampling nor do i see it on the monitor settings, but also right now, my computer has a gtx 980, so dont know what the options will be. i have no issues with 1080p 60hz or 4k 60hz, but as i mentioned above, on the ps5 it seems to switch between the 2 display/hertz options.

I do notice the quality looking better on the 4k supersampling. Anyways, i just wanted to clarify the performance of my monitor which you have done, so thank you.
