Am i right in that the maths below mean that before i've even moved a mile in a diesel, i will have to travel nearly 7.3k miles in a petrol just to match the initial cost of the cars ?

2008 08 Focus Titanium 2.0 TDCI <10k Miles - £12,889
Tax per year - £125
Fuel Tank - 53 Litres/11.7 Gallons
Full Tank @ 101.9 - £54.007
Miles per Tank 51.3 (Combined) - 600.21 Miles/Tank
Pence per Mile - 9.0p
8000 Mile Cost - £720.00

2008 08 Focus Titanium 2.0 Petrol <10k Miles - £11,988 - £851 (901 - £50 extra for Tax) cheaper than Diesel
Tax per year - £175 - £50/year dearer than Diesel
Fuel Tank - 55 Litres/12.1 Gallons
Full Tank @ 101.9 - £56.045
Miles per Tank 39.8 (Combined) - 481.58
Pence per Mile - 11.6p
8000 Mile Cost - £928
Miles required to match Diesel Cost - 7,336.20

The diesel will cost more to service I'm led to believe. Also your assuming the petrol prices will remain the same.

I'd say it's worth it not to sound like a tractor.

The sound doesnt bother me at all as my current car is a diesel anyway, but im after a bigger engine and as petrol and diesel prices are the same and my milage isnt high <8k a year, i figured no harm in looking at petrols.
