Okay...I keep getting different answers to this question!

I'm just trying to avoid upgrading anything else as I just keep getting the itch to upgrade everything. I think if I replace the PSU I'll end up trying to find the best one at 1200 Watts...then I'll want to return the 5700x3d for a 9800x3d on AM5...then I'll wonder if I should have went for 5090...then a new monitor

Maybe I'll just try undervolting the 5080 for now while I decide what to do

I understand not wanting to upgrade unnecessarily, but given you've just put around £1200 down on a GPU, you really shouldn't be looking to skimp on the PSU for the sake of £100.

If you google around long enough you're going to find answers from people supporting your hopes, it's a thing called confirmation bias, don't fall into that trap.

Right okay I guess I'll just get a new PSU...would I be fine using it for a week or so while I look around?

I remember when I bought this PSU there was a site called JohnnyGuru which was good for finding the best PSU but it appears to be gone now. Is there anything like that these days that you know of? I think I'm gonna go for a 1000W-1200W this time so I don't end up in this situation again one day

You generally do not want to be running your PSU at its limit for long periods of time, and it's also worth noting that PSU's degrade over time. Your supply is I imagine 4-7 years old judging by the launch date of the G3, it likely isn't capable of safely delivering its rated wattage for prolonged periods anymore. That said, the G3 was a quality unit, even if it shuts down or pops it technically shouldn't cause any damage, but I'd not want to risk a brand new £1200 GPU on that.

JohnnyGuru was fantastic, there's also various PSU tier lists, but ideally you want to be looking at an ATX 3.X unit and many of the better lists haven't been updated for some time. I'd avoid Corsair outside of the SHIFT right now as they've been having problems across the line otherwise, that said the SHIFT has side loaded cables and wont fit in most cases. The Phanteks I suggested is a solid option at the price point, I believe Seasonic is the OEM but I'd double check.

Seems like its lasted a good while, and if you'd aimed for a more mid-range build it would still be fine. I'm running an old arse 650W BitFenix Formula Gold with a 5800X3D/4070 setup, it's often about how far up the pipeline you think you'll go.

A good 850-1000W will be fine for anything par perhaps a 5090 tbh, and I expect that to be the case for years to come as people generally don't want to have to rent out their own nuclear reactor to game. I do get where you're coming from and ATX 3.X PSU's are like hens teeth at the moment so the Antec isn't that badly priced really for what it is, it's not a bad choice at all and I'm confident you'll be happy for a long time. Just don't fall into the efficiency trap, it's nice to have but it's largely unimportant in many respects. The key aspects for buying unless you run your rig at full pelt 24-7 should be how well the built in protections work + how extensive they are, and how reliable/well built the unit is, and how it handles various power loads. Buying Platinum over Gold at a premium usually isn't worth it as you'd never make the money back over its lifetime as a gamer in electricity bills.

Don't let me put you off buying the Antec HCG, I'd say it's worth the cost for what it delivers and peace of mind is king.

I built this PC around June 2017. So it's 7.5 years old now.

Tbh I don't even know what a ATX 3.X power supply means (Will watch some videos tomorrow) and not even bothered about efficiency. I just wanted the best quality and future proof PSU I could find so I could build my PC this weekend. I've waited so long to upgrade I can't handle anymore delays!

I was gonna get the 5070 TI as I thought it would be a lot more suited for my PSU and overall build but today I just thought Flip it I'm not waiting another month when there's a whole list of games I want to play
