Am I screwed? (Red light camera).

Traffic light cameras look like mini-gatsos and are positioned just before the lights (they are independant of them). The little boxes on top of regular traffic lights are just infra-red boxes that "detect" when a vehicle has approached them and change the lights accordingly.

I would love to know exactly what they are really for. As most traffic lights are controlled by a 'pad' that is cut into the tarmac. they are pressure sensitive and basically act as a switch. You can see them all over the roads if you look carefully. Its the same for speed cameras, red light cameras etc. They are cheap, as its just rubber tubing. Ive heard them boxes called strobe detectors too, to detect police cars, ambulances etc, and automatically set all the lights to red. Except ive never actually seen that happen.

That made you feel better?
How about the fact you failed to notice that the light at a pedestrian crossing had turned red and that you just continued through it when anyone could have been crossing?
How does that make you feel?

Seems you are far more worried about a just fine and points than you are about the fact you could have killed someone today.
:/

Wow sorry to boost this stupidly old thread, but SSOOOOO random to type in red light cameras and end up on my favourite forum!!

just goes to show how awesome the ocuk forums are, keep it up.

I think i MIGHT have gone past one of these cameras earlier on at like 1am, as was looking at the clear road not the lights. im an idiot, fairplay, nothing was coming but shudnt be researching this!!

So that camera pictured above DEFO aint one that can "get you done"? its gotta have like a gatso thing on there yeah?

That is not a camera on top of the lights. Its a sensor for traffic flow. Red light cameras are set around 5-20 meters BEFORE the stop line and not on top of the light itself.

Bit of a change now though - look out for the red light cameras that also act as speed cameras. They are identified as the road has the white line markings at the junction as well. This is so they can catch people that also speed through junctions on green or increase their speed past the limit to beat the amber before it turns red.

Massive overreaction.com

Seriously stop being so idiotic

I find it highly difficult to understand how anyone can miss a red light.
I find it highly difficult how people on a daily basis miss the signs, the road markings and the big yellow box that all say "You're about to get flashed for speeding" however they do and on a daily basis.
So why shouldn't they hit a pedestrian if they have managed to miss everything else.

Ah - but of course...this is the OcUK motors forum.
Where everyone is too good a driver to worry about speed limits.
Where nobody should have to worry about parking restrictions.
Where red lights are there purely for your annoyance.
Where everyone writes "child killer" in posts regarding speed because it's funny and ironic and....like writing M$ in a computers forum.

No I'm not taking a moral high ground with my clean license of 14 years - it just amazes me the people in this forum...yes still, even after all these years of reading it.
That the first reaction of driving through a red light isn't "How did I do that, I really should no better, what if..." but rather "What's the fine for it then lads?"

How was he going to run someone over?

He was driving around a parked car slowly, so he was clearly watching the road and where he was going and because his concentration on said parked car and no doubt the road he slipt by a red light. He'd have had to look up at the lights if moving closely too them as such taking his eye off the road.

Its not like he spotted pedestrian crossing and thought hey I'm gonna floor it before they go red and fly through at double the speed limit.

No life was at risk here as the OP was clearly sub 10mph.
