I have a first gen iPod touch which is stuck on iOS 3.1.3 or something like that. When I say stuck, I mean iTunes says it's the latest version for my model. I don't know what this jailbreaking malarky is but will it enable me to put iOS 4 on or will I have to upgrade to a new model (which I don't want to do as it still works damn well nearly 5 years on, thanks)?

You can do it, But it involves a bit of hacking and custom firmware.

Anyways, It doesn't run all that well on first gen devices, Hence probably why it tops out at IOS 3.

If it's working well enough, why are you wanting to update the iOS? If you need the features of the newer versions, you'll have to upgrade the device.

The iPod itself is just fine but more and more apps now say "This app requires iOS version 4". :(

I don't know of any way to get iOS 4 running on older devices, and I doubt that there is a way as it is so old and the hardware really isn't up to scratch.

You can run whited00r to get iOS 5-like features, but that will not solve your iOS 4 problem.

There is a project called whited00r you may wish to look up. However don't expect a newer version to run particularly well.

edit: mentioned above.
