Am I suffering from SLI usage issues or something else?

Hi all,

So I'm playing GTA and others games (ARMA 3) and I have a weird issue.

View distance settings tank my framerate. If I look at my GPU usage it's still super low (mid 40s) and my CPU usage is not at 100%. Any idea what's causing this? I thought it could be my HDD but I have no idea. It's an old thing, ripped out of an external HDD but never had any trouble before.

Also GTA V runs great for me maxed out @ 3440x1440, with distance scaling on medium. Solid 60fps. However in cutscenes it's decidedly less smooth despite still being a locked 60? It just looks choppy.

Any help would be great.

ARMA 3 is a shoddy game and it doesn't like GPUs of any kind. But you can use some startup parameters to attempt to fix. I say attempt as not sure it works

Create an shortcut of the A3 exe and add the last bits. Modify for your system

"C:\GAMES\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 3\arma3.exe" -skipIntro -maxMem=8000 -maxVRAM=6000 -cpuCount=4 -exThreads=8

As for GTAV, go and see that thread

Is your 4790k OC'd?

Arma 3 is just turd as mentioned above. GTA V cutscenes are choppy for me aswell on a Titan X. Strange dips to 30ish then back up to 60 FPS. It has more to do with the cutscenes in the game then anything else.

i had the same problem with a 290, the thing would not clock any higher than 850mhz and also thought my hard drive was a bottleneck but ive now tried 2 980's and thats running fine, just dont know why

Thanks, will definitely give this a go. In fairness to the game I'm standing on one of the highest points so it's not really representative of general play.

And yeah, only to 4.6 atm, haven't figured out how to make 4.8 completely stable.

4.6GHz should be fine mate, even with two Titan Xs. Try monitoring your CPU usage.

How is BF4? That's a good game to test GPU usage with. My 980Ms hit 99%. I have had many system (780s, 980s) in the past that also hit 99% by using higher resolutions, more AA etc

ARMA 3 is such a badly coded game. If you don't go below 40fps then consider yourself winning. Try ramping up some settings to make your cards get a workout

GTAV will be patched

Also, I am very jealous of your system

I found SLI to be nothing but a pain in most games. It was never as smooth as a single card, albeit frames were much higher and there would be a slight stutter in many games. For me, G-Sync and a single card works very well but with your setup, you need the grunt of SLI.... A rock and a hard place.

Not had an issue with SLI and GTA 5 really (seems to vary every patch though) cutscenes are fine and game play is smooth (maybe this is down to my 144hz refresh rate?)

I use a custom bat file to run and set to priority high that's helped so much

"<GTA FOLDER HERE>\PlayGTAV.exe"
timeout 60
wmic process where name="GTA5.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
wmic process where name="GTAVLauncher.exe" CALL setpriority "low priority"

works wonders for making the game smoother, do NOT quit the launcher now it will crash your game so use the bat file to auto set to low priority

Haha thanks this isn't common for me, I just had a point where I thought...why not :p.

@Gregster SLI has been good for me so far, I mean its not perfect but it hasn't been horrible...GTA V for the most part is pretty smooth outside of combat. Mortal Combat X works well for me pleasingly.

And cheers murah I'll give that a shot. Anything that might make the difference is grand.
