im moving house soon and someone said to me 'why not get a nice new hdtv for your new living room'. initially i thought this was a good idea, and not knowing much about them i thought i would look into it..

the big argument for them seems to be 'i dont want to have to buy another tv in a 18months time'. well, the hdtvs available now are only 720p, the ones about in a yr or two will be 1080p. im guessing other factors that affect the quality will also improve as the hd technology as a whole moves forward.

theres no HD material about yet. HDDVD and BluRay are just around the corner, but will be expensive to begin with, and there is not going to be vast catologs of material for them for a long long time.

skyHD is also going to be expensive, and limited. (i think theres only about 6-7 channels of HD) and im sure they will have all sorts of problems with it (who here with sky has never had problems with them?.. i know i have)

the prices will also fall. you can get a really good SD tv for ~£400. im sure the price of a HD LCD now is at least £400 more than it will be in a years time.

i hope this isnt seen as an unstructered rant, but i just feel theres mass advertising and hype for a new technology which a lot of people are buying into thinking its future proof, when it isnt.

anyone else think this, or am i completly missing something or perhaps i just havent seen the light?
