Am I the only one who doesn't see the appeal in online gaming?

I'd always prefer a decent single player game with a lengthy campaign over multi player focused games.

I appreciate I'm in the minority, but I find most online games are full of people swearing, playing music, being abusive, exploiting games etc.

Plus I find that mainly single player games have suffered and are more like add ons with the multiplayer being the main focus.

I know I can avoid some of the negatives by muting players which I do, I even block anyone other than friends from sending me messages.

But those negatives aside given a choice of playing a shooter online, or a long single player campaign I'd always choose the campaign.

One positive in the industry is that looking back, the best rated games have always tended to be games with single player as the main focus, whether it be uncharteds, last of us, gta, marios, red dead redemption, fallout, arkham knight, bioshock, mass effect, dark souls etc so maybe there is some hope....

Maybe it's my age, I'm sure if I was 15 today I'd have loved the way gaming is. For me in my teens, multiplayer meant 4 player goldeneye, mario kart and iss etc.

Anyway, anyone else feel similar? Do you prefer getting stuck into a long single player game? Or would you much rather play online against people?

Nope, I don't play online all that often. I suppose it's mostly because not many of my friends are particularly active gamers and I don't really get much out of playing online with strangers. I had fun with the tailing stuff on Watch Dogs but BF4 isn't much fun when you're in a team or squad of people you can't communicate with or use actual teamwork with.

I really enjoyed online PC gaming when I lived in South Africa; the community was relatively small, everyone played on the same local servers and you'd rapidly get to know people on the forums so it felt like a real community. These days unless you're playing with actual friends it just feels a bit anonymous.

I spend my teenage years in Cyber Cafes (Singapore) playing Counter Strikes. The whole PvP scene is something I love and online gaming allowed me to continue my teenage amusement across the internet, crossing distances and allowing me to keep in touch with friends.

As much as I enjoy good immersive solo games, mostly RPGs, a good shooter story is hard to come by, so it's mostly supported by half decent PvP. Thats' where online gaming is best for me anyway.

You're right, a good story is hard to come by, and I feel with the main focus especially with this generation of being online focused, that there's less reason to develop games with good stories, when you can release a multiplayer game with no story and then get more money coming in with dlc maps etc.

Games like titanfall for me are the negative effects of the online focus. A game that is released with no single player, no story,(or technically a minimal story) just online focus 100%

I have tried online games recently but even in football games I find the majority of players I did come across just try and exploit the game and do anything to win. Now I don't mind losing, but if it's to someone using exploits and glitches, it's not enjoyable. Which is why I'd rather career mode, or master league on pro Evo.

In shooter games again I find the online community majority tend to take the "games are serious" mentality and will choose to sit in a corner of a room for 20minutes with their gun pointed through a doorway to save their precious kill death ratio. And if you kill them some of them then proceed to send you an abusive message that they most certainly wouldn't say to your face. How anyone can find that fun, I'll never know. Give me a campaign any day...

The things I do enjoy with online are co-op. I loved playing through gears of war games in co-op for example.

With the exception of MP in the last of us I don't game online ever even though I have a good number of close friends that game online (none of them play the last of us).

I used to really enjoy CS back in the day but unfortunately my tolerance for dick heads has dwindled some what...

I think online features so highly for people due to random factor. By this I mean AI while getting better are still pretty easy to figure out. Online you have to try to out smart another person and that present a different challenge. This also affects replayability, against AI each play through will result in a very similar experience but every online game is different.

That aside though I do enjoy a good SP campaign. A good campaign is like a movie, it's the same each time but can feature highs and lows that MP just can't.

You should fix that if you don't want a admin to give you a warning

They are on the ball at the min :) - I know ive had two for bad post links including swearing ect

I tend to find online gaming is a lagfest ... and I got fibre . I had more enjoyment online on dialup on a pc than I do with consoles.

pc online is fine , although ive practically stopped doing that

The last time I really enjoyed online gaming was Motorstorm Apocalypse, no idea why but I really enjoyed playing that online, its probably the only platinum trophy I got that included competitive online elements.

Used to love playing BF1942 on the PC eons ago, was hoping I would maybe get into Planetside 2 once its finally released for the PS4.
