Am I wrong to think this is wrong ??

Knip - the voice of reason.

I worked in a prison last year and I had to get through 5 heavy steel doors before I came to some stairs.
Then 2 more steel doors where I got to some very narrow stairs and then through 2 more steel doors.
Prisons are not made to take wheelchair users.
They should be put under house arrest or something - maybe take the TV away and fast food etc.

Prepares to be flamed...

Surely from that remark you knew you were spouting bull?

Cripple, Vegetable.

Someone who is crippled or in a vegetated state.

Damn right shocking to call them names that correspond to their condition.

I bet you're sickened when we call people dumb because they cant speak. :D

Read the OP, he decided that the couple were "just fat", which is what several of us have taken issue with.

Personally, I have no problem with disabled people being put in jail if they commit a crime. My problem lies with the attitude of the OP, with him being extremely flippant about their disabillities.

Look at the picture. ( A picture speaks a thousand words ). They were not mentally disabled, so they knew what they were doing and they knew it was wrong. They then went out to purchase luxuries with the stolen money without a care in the world it seems.

The man was obese and walking whilst pushing his gorgeous wife who was also obese in her wheelchair. Most probably wondering what size TV to purchase with the cash to watch Jeremy kyle on.

What message does this send out, put on 20 stone and you wont ever get a prison sentance.

p.s. They werent just fat, they were HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

someone should email the Home secretary telling him his prisons are in breach of the DDA

also btw i know this is a small point but i just want to clear it up if thats ok...

this disability everyone is saying they have..

its their weight right? I only ask coz no-one has mentioned what it is.. also i guess both persons get disability living allowance? incapacity benefit? as well as other stuff.

i feel a bit like that little girl who shouts to the naked emperor "but hes got no clothes on!" when everyone is congratulating the emperor on his new suit

The story doesn't define their disability, you can assume it is their weight if you wish and that might even seem reasonable to do so but it is no more than an assumption unless you've got another source that confirms that is the way they are disabled.

It could be that they have some other condition which makes exercise difficult or medication that makes them more prone to gaining weight. For now we just don't know so to further assume along this line is possibly entertaining but ultimately futile.

I think they suffer from McDonaldsitus. This condition makes your body so heavy that it effects your hips, knees and ankles.
Therefore, you have to sit in a wheelchair and get registered as disabled and you get a whole set benefits and also now the law doesnt affect you either.

This conditioned started in the USA and has got quite bad and now it has started to spread across the UK. :D

Couldnt find another source for the news story apart from the Sun. Can we draw any conclusions from that?

I understand Mrs Bates had breathing difficulties in court and had to go to the hospital. Strange why there isnt more information that would allow people to understand the judge's decision better. (e.g. the nature of their disability) Histrionics more important than the truth i guess..

As I've said many times before, you're lucky if many of the papers even get the name and charge correct when it comes to court reporting, and that's before the editorial changes to keep the article short, and to the point that the judge doesn't have a clue about what he's doing.

I can only find a piece in the Grimsby Telegraph apart from the Sun, it doesn't reveal that much more other than confirming the breathing difficulties and a little bit more background for Netto.

I don't think there are any definite conclusions to be drawn other than that there isn't enough information really to make a fair assessment. It is somewhat odd that more information is not forthcoming but I'm not unduly surprised at lax journalism given the sources.

Quote from report

'Police officers found £2,000 in a biscuit tin on top of a bedroom wardrobe.'

How high does the wheelchair suspension up go nowadays !!! ;)

Rayer, until you know for a fact that the only disability they have is that they are overweight then I suggest you stop making such sweeping generalisations.

They may be overweight as part of their disability as already mentioned in this thread.

Indeed, Chances are they have varicose vains, Diabetes, Heart disease, Asthma, Hip and knee joint trouble. :D

Thing is, Those pictures we're seeing are after they managed to make 13 trips a day to Netto to get the cash.

So no doubt, they've lost loads of weight, That's a keen exercise routine! Just shows, All it takes is a little motivation to get a fat ass moving!
