is it true that i can put a am3 cpu in a am2 motherboard and it would still boot so i can update the bios?

Depends upon the what bios updates the manufacturer has done for the board, I know MSI updated some of their AM2+ boards to take AM3 chips.
You would need to go to their website and check out what updates there are.

AM2+ only, think its a power issue which keeps a AM3cpu working on a AM2 motherboard.
