Now am I missing something or is this just plain CRAZY?

3600 Sempron 2.0GHz; 800fsb; 256mb L2 cache = £85.72

3200 A64 2.0GHz; 1000fsb; 512mb L2 cache = £70.44

Why would anyone want to buy the Sempron

simple answer: a non informed individual would choose the sempron over the athlon, because the sempron says 3600+ and the athlon says 3200+, so they think 'hey i'll get that one, it has a bigger number'

there usually just as overclockable as athlons, and there almost as good gaming wise as well, im not sure why semprons are considered so well 'evil'?

To a point the cache holds them back, but clocked high enough this doesnt matter, especially given their price, low cooling requirements and the low cost of socket 754..

a 64bit Sempron 3100+ overclocked would be an excellant choice for a normal gamer who has an high end AGP card such as the 6800 Ultra or X800, someone who plays gamers such as Fear and Quake 4 now and again i think :)

The Semprons in the OP are AM2 ones.

indeed, so it would be inexpensive processor (overclockable a fair bit), inexpensive motherboard, some g.skill DDR2 and a X1800XT, thats not bad for how much it would cost

But for less money you could have an inexpensive processor that is in every way better than the sempron. Theres even the a64 3000 for vastly less, don't forget you can't get more cache by overclocking.

yeah but reading some reviews online it seems like the extra cache makes so little difference its not even worth thinking about...

Those sempron am2 s overclock pretty well. In my asrock am2nf4g-sataII mobo, wich has no vcore options it is more than happy to do a 24/7 50% overclock.

The semprons may over clock well but the A64's do too. The whole point is the sempron costs MORE than the A64, the A64 is actually the more budget of the 2 CPU's. Not only is it cheaper but it has more cache and a higher HT link speed at the same clock speed.

AMD know that the sempron chips will be used my PC builders for cheap home use machine for office etc. plus, with us lot, we know what were talking about and we know the semprons just aint worth the cash for playing games even though they are good at it, but for the budget minded, in my opinion, a great choice.

But the 3000/3200 Semprons are also priced so high that the Athlon 64 3000 comes in at only £1 more than the 3200 Sempron. Even with budget in mind the extra £1 makes the Sempron a stupid choice on AM2. The only Sempron on AM2 worth considering is the 2800 and thats only if your on a REALLY tight budget.
