Hi folks,

I just setup/built a new PC based on the socket AM2 platform. I have been using the stock cooler for my 3800x2 (AM2) on my M2N32SLI board and so far have acheived a maximum overclock of 2.52GHz with temperatures soaring into the 60s. I am hence on the lookout for a new cooler (a decent one!!!).

So far I have seen that from reading around that the following work with the AM2 socket..... (DON'T SEEM TO BE MANY AROUND!)

(1) Artic Freezer Pro 64
(2) Zalman 9500 (new version)

Possibilities are .....

Tuniq Tower 120 - Uncertain whether this will fit mobo
ThermalRight Sl-128 - Said to work with AM2 but won't fit my M2N32SLI board due to the high copper heatsinks on the mobo.

I would mainly like to hear from people who are using different coolers (AIR ONLY) on their AM2 platforms especially any who are using a M2N32SLI board.

I am also interested in any coolers that will fit AM2 (esp. M2N32SLI) with minor alterations (ie a bit of filing!!! etc).

ive just grabbed the new 9500. its a thing of beauty and compared to the stock amd fan is massive!

Cools considerably better too!

Matt.

hi matt,

Have you oc'ed your system with the Zalman yet??? Give me some idea of your temps if possible (idle,load(1core),load(2cores)). I use Prime95 (SP2004) for loading the CPU.
From reading around the impression I get is that some people have been disappointed with the cooling ability of the Zalman.

Personally I am not too worried about noise but more about the cooling as I would like to get my 3800x2 up to FX62 speeds (2.8GHz) with reasonable temps.

Jules

Thanx for the photo gives me an idea of size.

Just read another forum by you (4800 + Zalman). Seems that you have a 939 socket cpu!!! I am mainly interested in AM2 systems only (I know that Zalman will fit an AM2) just I don't want too many 939ers in this thread!!!!! The photo was welcome though ... that Zalman is much bigger than I thought!!!

The Thermalright Ultra-90 fits socket AM2, but be aware that it is VERY tall - and therefore may not actually fit in your case! I've managed to get one into a Praetorian, but only by fitting a side fan on the outside of the case, since clearance between cooler and case is about 3mm.

Interested in shoehorning a Tuniq Tower into AM2??? It looks possible .... Need to buy a Zalman Clip

Fitting Tuniq Tower 120 to AM2 (Using Zalman Clip)

Its a translation from a chinese page hence the ropey looking english.

I sent an email to Tuniq a few days ago asking about the Tuniq Tower 120 compatability with AM2 this is the reply I got ......

Hello.
As for our study, you may use Zalman's ZM-OC1 AM2 clips to solve this
problem.
You may refer to this Chinese review site.

Hope this info helps solve your problem.

So now I am off to see if I can buy this clip from somewhere!!!!!

Also upon reading the review you need to shimmy in a spacer later (3-5mm thick) to get the pressure on top of the heatsink just right.

Cannot find the clip anywhere so I think I will probably have a look at the titan amanda ... Hope it has enough clearance to clear the motherboard heatsinks and heatpipes.

I'm using the Zalman 9500-AM2 on my FX62. It's very quiet and it does a great job of cooling the CPU at stock, although when overclocking the CPU temps rose rather sharply when running at 1.55V and above. I have set it to its quietest setting though with only one 120mm exhaust fan and an Antec NeoHE 550W PSU, all on their lowest settings (I was more interested in a quiet PC more than an overclockable one!)

Yeah aj... noise can be a demon. I've got 2 7900GTXs in my case and they generate enough boom boom without the other fans joining in.

Anyhow I have now set my sights on the Titan Amanda cooler which looks expensive but it fits my mobo well apart from being fiddly to fit. The only thing now is to wait for a few more reviews so I can make a judgement on whether "the cooler" will help me get from my current limit of 2.5GHz (2 core stable @ 1.49V) to 2.8GHz stable (FX62). If it looks like it can do this then I don't mind forking out the 66quid for it and I can always use it on the next gen AM2 chips (65nm) next year.

Any1 seen any decent reviews of overclocking with this cooler on a 3800x2???

Jules

Nice review. Looks impressive still, looks like it will be nice and quiet too. Yep still considering buying one when OC get them in stock.

Found this interesting link....
Frosty

Talks about a socket 939 - AM2 adapter. Link obtained from another user on these forums. Thought it might fit in here. No idea where you could buy one in the UK. I think overclockers should perhaps possibly stock a similar kind of adapter for us AM2ers.

Any1 found some good AM2 coolers we don't know about?

Jules

Hmmmm..... Just seen the Titan Amanda in stock .... just to throw a spanner in the works I see that overclockers have released(in stock) new AM2 compatable Scythe Ninja and Infinity coolers. The Infinity looks a promising alternative being easier to fit and saving me a PCI slot. You reckon the Scythe Inf. or Ninja will get my 3800x2 up to 2.7/2.8GHz??????

Time to look for some reviews.
