AM2+/AM3

Hi.

I'm just a little confused.

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 940. Is this compatible with a AM3 socket motherboard with DDR3 RAM.

Nope, it's an AM2+ CPU, so wouldn't work on an AM3 motherboard. It's only AM3 CPU's that can work on both AM2+ and AM3 boards.

AM2+ was the new socket to the older AM2, just like AM3 is to AM2+.

That CPU is compatible with AM2+ motherboards only.

edit - there is the slightest of chances it would work with AM2, but wouldn't really want to pair it with one anyway.
