AM2+ and am3s

Most of the difference between DDr2 and 3 is synthetic, it shouldnt hold you back, make sure you check compatibility and ensure you have the correct bios installed.

Hey chaosquall, there would be a "slight" advantage in benchmarks using DDR3 but I don't think you would notice any difference in real world usage! (unless your a benchmarker!) . . . I'm using an AM3 chip in an AM2+ mobo (with DDR2) and it's sweet! :D

It's normally good practice to update a motherboards BIOS using the original CPU before you "swap-out" chips . . . . will probably still work without an update but I've had teething problems in the past doing this . . . things like the temp sensors reporting 100°C and weirdness like that!

No performace hit you would ever notice.
Only thing of any relevance is that I believe the upcoming 6 core AM3 CPUs will be incompatable, because they drop the DDR2 controller. They are not a great choice for most users right now anyway though.

Ouch, I sank my money into new DDR3 because I wanted a 6-core upgrade route... should have checked it out better :(

But kudos to AMD all the same; they do seem to look after their customers better than Intel with their throwaway 1156 platform :)

Nice :D

I guess it has the DDR2 memory controller after all :)

I do hope mine gets a bios upgrade to support them :)

None has yet! :(

For the OP... although yours is an older AM2+ Board with the older 600SB you should not notice much difference performance wise over the newer AM2+ Boards running AM3 CPUs :)

Go for it!

I doubt they will add six support for yours but you never know!

thanks for the replys the have updated the bios for my mobo quite a lot from 2007 - 2009 last update was 2009/11/30 which was a beta so you never know ^^
