Hi,

As above are they worth it?

What are the main differences other than it being AM2?

I have a opty 170 dual core, dfi sli dr mobo, zalman 9500led, 2x 1g GSkill RAM, 7900gtx....

I just wondered what differences I would see?

Or is it too early to say?

I have seen threads on this before and ppl saying there is not much diff other than running the RAM at higher speeds as the mobo supports DDR2 RAM and you can use RAM at PC5300 +.....

So apologies for repeating or recreating a thread...

However just wanted to try and establish how old/new my system is?

All comments would be most appreciated

Cheers!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance...

Your PC is amazing my friend!!! probably up there in the top 1-3% of systems imo.

it is my uninformed opinion that you would see virtually no real world improvement going over to AM2 - your current system will be more than capable of running games for the next year or two - until DX10 becomes fully established :)

you would see 0% improvement tbh, would be totally pointless for you to 'upgrade' to AM2.

save your cash for something else :)

Speaking of socket AM2, its the 21st of May already and the release date is supposed to be the 23rd! Why are there not any AM2 products up on OcUk yet for preorder?

All the AM2 cpus and motherboards are on the site. Heres the dual core AM2 cpus

As said AM2 won't give you much of an improvement yet, but when AMD start to release the new 65nm chips (late 2006) and quad core (2007 I think) there will be some improvements. No reason to upgrade from your opty 170 just now.

Oh, cool.. there up there now. Something I noticed though;

AM2 FX-62 DDR2-800 or DDR2-1066 (PC2-6400 - PC2-8500)
AM2 Dual Core X2 DDR2-667 or 800 (PC2-5300 or PC2-6400)

Why are different RAM speeds reccomended for the different cpu's? Surely the speed of the cpu depends on the multiplier, not the HTT. Or are AM2 completely different in the way that the frequencies worked out?

Same HTT's throughout the range. I should imagine they're recommending faster RAM for faster CPU's just to give the system more of an edge.

my votes the same as everyone elses... stick with what youve got, there will be no improvement for you, its probably going to be a couple of months before AMD bring out a propper AM2 cpu, at the moment most of them seem to be simply ported over from 939, there will be some interesting things comming out in Q3 and Q4. keep your eyes peeled.

But if the HTT is kept the same, then surely the ram speed will be the same, and your wasting your money on getting faster ram. Fair enough if your going to overclock and keep the ram at 1:1 but at stock it just seems stupid.

I think chances are the ram isn't 1:1 with the HTT. When coupled with DDR2-800, a 1:2 divider would be set.

I was going to upgrade to a 3800 X2 but I think ill hold off a week or two and go for an AM2 x2, That way Ill have an upgrade path with the AM2 motherboard? Arnt they stoping 939 sockets?

Any initalial ideas on which motherboard to choose, dont need SLI but on board sound and SPDIF is a must.

With the new socket will normal HSF's work?

if you get the am2 you will need ddr2 memory which is hideously expensive for a good kit at the moment. and yes i think you do need a new HSF as on some motherboards it says its a new layout.

Yup, you'll need new ram, new HSF(Basic one comes wit hte cpu retail box though) new cpu and new motherboard. Also there are likely to be quite a few teething problems with the new motherboards. Id say it deffinately worth waiting a while until things settle down a sbit.
