AM2/DDR2 - Worth the wait?

I'd like to upgrade my rig sometime soonish, but I'd also like to switch from my current P4 to an AMD (either X2 4400 or San Diago 4000).

Now obviously those two AMD's don't "get along" with DDR2 - so is DDR2 memory really worth the wait?

Or should I upgrade now and just get normal DDR?

Basically I use the computer for everything, games, mutli-tasking etc.

Hard to say, some people recommend waiting for 6 months - 1 year after a new platform has been released allowing them time to remove the teething issues. Also, the AM2 platform is 3 months away and no benchmarks have been seen yet, it might end up that Intels conroe will whoop the new generation of AM2 processors, who knows.
3 months is a long time though, regardless ;)

However, seeing as you have a P4 now, I'm assuming it isn't exactly a slouch, so hold off for Conroe. A P4 system will easily suffice until then, and you can then build yourself a nice spanking up to date rig with full DX10 etc. As long as you have a P4 of at least 3.0ghz, then wait.

Personnally AM2/DDR2 isn't exciting me as DDR2 doesn't give much if any gain over DDR at the moment.

Conroe on the other hand is.

That makes me think. You let loose on a Conroe - the dies are tiny so they are cool running (they should be), they will be clocked about 3.0ghz stock(?), you have a phase changer, I have yet to hear of an Intel cold bug...

'theoretical' the conroes are. until november you must wait.

but amd adding 1066Mhz DDR2 support to their controllers, that IS interesting and should be with us shortly.

I thought they were only waiting for the 800mhz stuff?

:Edit: Doh, missed the vital word "Adding support" /slaps self.
