Does anyone have an AM2 cpu yet? I see that different ram is reccomended for different cpus but i can find very little info on why. Do the cpus all use different FSB frequencies? can you still run dividers ?

I was thinking of buying some DDR2 667mhz which i would use for a Pentium D 805 then conroe but id like to have the option of taking it over to AM2 when the new 65nm chips appear is this an option ore should i plum for 800mhz stuff for a start?
cheers
Scott

Its HTT.

As for ram speeds, it doesnt matter. IIRC theres nothing to stop you running a Sempron with 800mhz or 1066mhz ram. It wont use all of the bandwidth (not till overclocked anyway) hence the "recommended" frequencies.

OK OK HTT so out of the box an fx62 doesnt need 800mhz ram?

No, I dont think so. You can overclock Geil Value DDR2-667 to 800mhz anyway, so theres no problem even if it does need 800mhz for optimum performance.

But what if i dont buy the Geil?

Its cheap for a 2GB kit - was £125 or so in "this week only" so I dont see why you wouldnt get it.

Anyway, thats just an example I knew off-hand. I'm sure other 667mhz sticks can overclock too.

found some samsung for £90 thats why

Good brand, I'd be suprised if that didnt overclock. You sure its not high density by the way? That kind of ram is cheap but not supported by many motherboards.

According to ocuks website it overclocks well I managed to pick it up for £79inc rather than £90 i thought it was (I miscounted)
Oh and its this stuff

DDRII modules features faster speeds of up to 667 MHz, higher data bandwidths, lower power consumption

by about 50 percent, and enhanced thermal performance versus DDRI ones.

DDRII modules can be used on desktops to improve overall performance!

*Capacity: 2GB (2x1GB)
*Maximum 5.4GB bandwidth
*JEDEC standard 1.8 + 0.1V power supply
*CAS Latency: 4
*4 Bank
*Off-chip driver (OCD) impedance adjustment on die termination (ODT)

• 240-Pin

its ddr2 - it can come in 2gb sticks - high density isnt an issue

most value ddr2 clocks, certainly better than value dd1

you dont need that fast ram :) the ram you found would be fine

Thanks guys

yeah it can according to xs, but you need high rated components to do it, any higher than 800 and its 2t time

iirc it doesnt have as greater effect on ddr2 as it does on ddr1
