Im new to the amd side of things, just recently got a phenom2 955 and this board (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-180-GI).
I currently have it running at 3.6ghz 1.425v and i am very impressed with the performance so far but my question is would overclocking the ht link and bus aswell offer any real world performance gains or is it just not worth the risk of overheating and instabillity with stock chipset cooling?

i say from 2000mhz to 2300mhz is in the safe zone, but to be fair you wont notice much or if any difference.

you will notice very little difference in an HT Link clock... You want to concentrate on CPU and NB Frequencies.. at 3.6ghz CPU you will want your NB clock to be around 2.2 - 2.4ghz

I noticed a gain from overclocking the HT link and NB toghther, rather than the NB alone in 3DMark06. It was negligible though. A couple of hundred points on the overall score.

Can't say I've noticed any difference in games, as anything over 3GHz on my Phenom FX-5000 (basically a Phenom II, unlocked from 45nm Athlon X2 5000+) runs all my current games adequately.

Have seen a few benchmarks that suggest CPU-NB and HT Link overclocking can raise the minimum framerates in a few games.

Generally, unless you're running multi-GPU or playing games with a framebuffer higher than your graphics card's onboard memory, the point of diminishing for HT link returns is lower than the stock 1800 or 2000 (depending on chip) anyway.
