My old Athlon XP2000+ is starting to creak under the load of Office 07 and I can feel an upgrade coming on. It occurs to me that if I could get an AM2+ board now, fitted with an existing dual core processor, the next upgrade could pretty much simply consist of dropping one of the forthcoming quad cores into it (ideally when the price has dropped a bit).

Manufacturers are now claiming to have "AM2+ motherboards", incl. Biostar, MSI and ASUS (M2A-VM), if you believe their press releases and the many review sites that simply cut and paste them. However, I'm confused as I read conflicting things about them. Do these boards really support the additional features of AM2+ (HT3, split power planes) or are they just riding on the back of the fact that the new quad processors would work in them, to existing AM2 spec?
