I've recently purchased a TRUE, and tried mounting it on my asus M3A after two nights laboriously lapping both HS and CPU. The thing doesn't fit on the mobo! Are there any AM2 mobos that this HS fits on, so that the air is directed towards the rear of the case? or am I being a retard and missing something really obvious?

On most AM2 boards the socket orientation will only allow this HSF to have the fan pointing up or down. Unless you have a tight finning case it should not matter.

up it is then! i got it to fit once i moved the ram to slots 2+4... the next issue is the screws that don't reach far enough past the mounting bracket to marry with the back-plate. i'm working on fashioning some smaller "springs" out of random bits of plastic. fingers crossed!

The screws should fit into the backplate which came with the motherboard (unless it's a gigabyte).

Is it like 939 where the metal backplate had threaded bits which went through the motherboard and the budget plastic backplate didn't?

yeah, there's a threaded backplate and a budget standoff frame on the topside that the AM2 coolers clip onto, but that is unthreaded, and the sprung screws that come with the TRUE don't fit through. i've just removed the frame, constructed some make-shift plastic "washers", removed the springs from the screws and screwed them directly into the backplate. not the greatest solution, but the only one i could see working, without putting literally all my weight on the screws to get them to meet the backplate.
