am2 only a 3-5% increase over X2...

On the plus side I didn't really waste any money by buying a current X2 setup instead of waiting for the new M2 sockets and processors :)

Any one remember the Euro 98 theme tune, well this is slightly adopted.

We've seen it all before, but we know, we so sure. Thats Intels going to throw it away, going to blow it away. But I know they are carp. Da da ddaa.

Ehehe, It made me smile.

Conroe gonna make a AM2 FX62 look like a celeron D :D

Hehe! Shall I put my spoon away. I enjoy stirring...

That aside, Conroe does look to be a very, very impressive chip! I do look forward to see what both companies have up their sleeves. But I'm not as much as a fanboy as previously mentioned. I just enjoy stirring (as mentioned above).

Oh well, lets wait and see.

Any speculation at this point is a bit silly, really. When AMD64 first appeared, it's performance wasn't exactly stellar, yet Athlon 64 wound up a lot faster than most expected at its official launch. I doubt AMD are or will be happy just to sit on their thumbs whilst Intel roll out what looks to be a mightily impressive chip, so I'm sure they'll be playing with something inside the Athlon 64s to make them more attractive: having finally made some headway into the CPU market with the AMD64 tech, it's unrealistic to expect them just to throw it away...

But then, if we take the NV5800 as an example...

Also, remember that the benchmarks (that I've seen, anyway) of the Conroe chips are not exactly independent or what us as the end user will wind up with unless we fork out a lbig wad (err...) or happen to work for Intel.

On the other side of things, it doesn't really come as any surprise that the DDR2 AMD sockets aren't particularly stunning: we saw what DDR2 did to the Prescott (admittedly, it was rubbish anyway, but we're splitting hairs here) so any gain at all is a good thing. However, it will be interesting to see how individuals like us on this forum can play with the HT settings when we get to play with some high bandwidth DDR2.

My conclusions? Don't hold your breath.
