Well, im wondering, I will be making a budget AM2 system for around £300-£400 and im wondering, will amd be releasing all the latest cpus on it when they come out, or will they make a new socket? As say in a year, and I want to upgrade, will AM2 still be the latest amd socket?

cheers

By all accounts, quad cores will be supported on AM2.

Of course there's issues round whether motherboards bought now will actually work with them and whether or not the manufacturers release BIOSes for them if required.

thanks.. also

what do you think I Shoould get.. an am2 budget system for £300-£400 or a conroe budget system for £400-£500.. bearing in mind that, I will be keeping this comp for along time afterwards..

conroe offers more bang for buck really when your going to spend about 800-900 i suppose even the cheapest conroe can be overclocked until it can rival a 4800+? correct me if im wrong on that im not 'up to speed'
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz £129.95
Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-151-AS) £99.95
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-092-CS) £133.50
Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 512MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-118-SP)
£94.95
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB ST3808110AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-051-SE)
£29.50
Antec Super LANBOY Aluminum Super Mini Tower Case - No PSU (CA-012-AN)
£28.75
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (SC-040-CL)
£15.95
FSP Sparkle FSP400-60 Blue Storm 400W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-004-SK) £36.95
Total=569.50
plus vat=669.16
So actually am2 is the way to go becasue it takes about 800 quid until u can get a decent conroe pc the pc above is bad really considering its price
EDIT2: just realised i missed dvd driev so that would bring it up to over 700 quid

yea, but which socket do you think will last longer... the am2s cheaper aswell

lol, when have Intel ever kept the same socket for a long time? We're still not sure if quad-core Kentsfield will work with current Conroe mobos.

AMD will surely be keeping AM2 for atleast 1 year, it has only just come out and it would be stupid if they decided to change sockets in such a short period of time.
