I've currently got got a 2800+ socket A, 1.5gb ram and an agp 6600 vanilla. I've got a 3500 AM2 chip sat here doing nothing but i know that to get that chip in there (which i got for free) i'd have to get a mobo, new graphics card and new ram and i just wanna factor whether or not it's worth it.

I know that the AM2 stuff is going to go quad core and all that jazz. should i want to do a smaller upgrade in future i can just stick one of those quads/duals in there i suppose. do you guys think this is a reasonable upgrade route or should i stick my money somewhere else, despite having the free chip? my budget is on the low side

You can get AGP AM2 mobos like the Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA. Might that fit your purposes?

From OcUK that and 2 GiB Corsair Value would run you £74.00 inc tax and postage.

Well how long do you plan on keeping that stuff? It seems like it's just a cheap CPU and memory upgrade, not the foundation of a better system in the future.

well, if i go AM2 i assume i've got a pretty straight forward upgrade path to the quad core stuff. is that right? for as long as that's use-able i suppose.
