No you have not gone back in time. A few of my friend have built up Windows 98 rigs for a bit of retro gaming fun so thought I would join in. So I am on the hunt for a nice used motherboard and CPU. The best motherboards I have found that are compatible are socket AM2 and Socket 775. It can be multi core but Windows 98 can only use a single core so its single core performance I am after. So my question is what is the better single core CPU available in these formats?

Thanks

Surely it would be better to look for which motherboard has drivers for windows 98 and go from there?

Thanks for the reply. I found lots of old windows 98 compatible motherboards out there that was not the problem. I am not overly familiar with CPUs back then so am all a bit lost a sea at the moment. I was hoping someone could shed a little light on the subject to help me narrow down the search. I have looked at probably 100 motherboards and the newest ones I found with full Windows 98 support are AM2 or 775 so guessed one of those is probably a good option. There are older sockets too but guessed older sockets too but figured newest was best?

Graphics drivers might also be a problem- you might have to get a motherboard with AGP to get a card that can do Windows 98.

Thanks for info. I was planning on using AGP as I already have a Geforce 6800 U AGP card. I found quite a lot of AM2 and 775 motherboards with AGP and they all had Win95 support.

If you're playing games that require Win98, then I would imagine almost any AM2 or 775 CPU would beat the nuts off it.

Probably best to just get a nice working, compatible, mobo and go from there. for what it's worth, clock-for-clock, the 775 Exxxx CPUs will generally be a little ahead of the AM2s.

I was thinking the same. Any of the newer CPUs would be over kill. So if I aim at 775 and get say one of these https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5VDCMX/HelpDesk_CPU/ then what would be a good single core CPU for it? Thanks :)
