Well, im making a budget system.. And im wondering which is more future proof. Conroe or AM2. Im not talking about which will last me longer. Im talking about in 2-3 years, which will still be running AM2 or 775 socket?

I would say Conroe for sure. While AM2 is also new, it is more of an update to the 939 platform. I suppose AM2 could be used at a later date for a new AMD architecture but who knows.

SiriusB

If you are making a budget system I'd just opt for the best performance now as quite frequently it seems even if you were to pick the 'right' platform and it does continue in an unchanged form for more than two years(a rarity in itself) the cost of upgrading is likely to be about the same as buying a whole new system. Also remember that sometimes older motherboards(the most likely component to remain) stop receiving bios updates to allow them to use the latest CPUs.

Having said all that I'd probably agree with SiriusB, Conroe is slightly more likely to be using socket 775 :)

I have to disagree with the above.

Socket 775 for Intel has been arround for some time now & going by history you would have to say that Intel will change to a new socket design sooner rather than later. Conroe will continue into this new platform though.

AM2 has just been released & AMD has generally kept its platforms arround longer than Intel.

I don't know.
The conroe is a new chip for an already established socket...

AM2 is a new socket without really any new chips, just updated older chips...

Its more likley the next gen Intel chips will be on a different socket and thus require more of a system overhaul to upgrade, while the next amd chips will probebly be am2 and you'll just need to swap the proc.

so if by future proof you mean easy to upgrade an AM2 system would seem to last longer

I agree - I think AM2 will be around longer than 775.

Skt939 didnt last that long though did it?
Agree.

I was looking at building computer for a friend and thought it would be better future-proofed with 939 instead of 754, how wrong I was!

My conclusion is that there is no such things as future proofing in computer world! Go for the cheapest but reasonable fast processor, regardless of sockets.

Though, it might changes when Conroe is released.

i dont think either of them will be around for very long, if im honest. If your looking for lastability then forgot it, your probably better off buying a console :o Such is the way we are moving at the moment. Also even if intel stay with 775, to support a new cpu you'll almost certainly have to buy a new motherboard anyway, which is how intel seem to play it.

Conroe - defirintly. This will mean a bang utpo date motherboard, PCI-Ex and DDR2. Should be enough to build a system that will last you a good couple of years if you don't want to upgrade it.

That being said, I don't expect to upgrade my own system for quite a while - the only thing I'll be looking at is getting a second generation DX10 card when they come out. I'll probably skip the first generation because of the mixed mode the rumours are reporting, but as with all things it depends on budget and the timing of course.

Futureproof = being able to upgrade your system without changing too many of the expensive components in a years time.

Therefore, AM2 is more futureproof than Conroe. S775 is getting old now and when Intel adds CSI (HTT clone) to the Core 2 chips they will need a whole new motherboard and chipset.

Isn't Kentsfield (quad-core) going to be based on socket 775? If so then I'd say the socket has a while to go yet.

I've seen at least one (Gigabyte) motherboard claim compatibility with Conroe AND Kentsfield.

In light of the above and for performance reasons, I'd say a Conroe-775 based solution is the way to go for now.

The good news is though that both AMD and Intel use DDR2 memory now so that's one less thing different, and i.e. one less thing to change in an upgrade.

If you can afford to wait, stick around till December-ish, when my guess is, AMD will announce their next architecture. It'll almost certainly be on AM2, but what we're waiting to hear is whether it'll be worth sticking to AM2 for! If you need to upgrade now, I'd go Intel, as, although it's true that their current socket has been around a while and is due an update, we don't know for certain when this will come and how many more chips will be released on the current socket even after the new socket is out. If you go for an entry-level Conroe chip now, you already have a fair bit of room upgrade later.

I would go with Conroe, 775 has out lived socket 754, the old 940, 939 and its now along side AM2. But you never know next year Intel might decide they have reached their limits of 775 and release a new socket type. Im sure AMD are in the process of developing a new socket to replace AM2 next year due to the speed of Conroe but I could be wrong.

Either right now, the K8L coming out after xmas should be very fast just like the conroe now. I mean what single card GPU's are coming out in the next 6 months that wont be a bottleneck to a conroe at 3.5ghz?

Get a 6300 or 6400 now, then you can upgrade to an extreme version in 18months time when they have come down in price.

There's no such thing as Future Proof, i got a 939 mobo last january [2005] and now its out of date. Just pick the one and hope!
