Hi Guys,

Sorry if you've seen the same question buried in other posts, but I'm still at a loss and thought I'd post in the motherboard section (now isn't that a good idea when I have a motherboard question? lol ).

I'm getting the "AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz" chip, and I do plan to overclock it. Also, this memory: "G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit".

So, the question is, what motherboard should I match with it, and more importantly, why?

I'm trying to get my head round why there are motherboards at £50, and 'boards at £150?

Cheers,

Andy.

It depends on the chipset, hence the price. Do you plan to go crossfire? If so I suggest a 790FX board or 790X. For intergrated graphics, go for a 790G or 785G. Other boards will be fine as well if you plan to stick to one card.

As suggested the ASUS M4A785TD V-EVO has got many features and is a decent overclocking board by all accounts. However it is less well suited to Crossfire.

Crosshair III is what I use, I came off an £80 board with the same chipset. Best pc buy yet, love having the 965 in it. Using gskill ripjaw 2000htz- no issues.

Better;
fan options,
bios,
NB & SB cooling,
hardware quality,
extra software and support,
better power control and overclocking,

not so much performance- both boards will probably run things at the same speed roughly... but you really will get what you pay for.

I'm leaning towards the Crosshair III option, purely because it seems to have a lot more options and cooling. I tend to keep PC's until they're knackered (last two PC's have been 5/6 years old before moving on) and I think that if this PC lasts the same length of time, I might as well go for the best motherboard for the job?

Good thinking or purely wasting my money??

Ta,

Andy.

The Crosshair III is a brilliant board, and it is really easy to overclock. But gigabyte boards are also very future proof as well, so I would go with Asus or Gigabyte.

Sorry for barging in but what is the best AM3 mobo to get that has onboard Graphics but also has the chance to unlock a fourth core?

I'm buying everything from OC, and they only stock Asus or Gigabyte.... So, out of the selection they sell, which is the one to get??

Cheers,

Andy.

Hi ,

I think you will be stoked with the Crosshair III or the Gigabyte 790FXTA, I have had the Gigabyte 790FXT (the previous 790FX board) and it was great, currently running an MSI GD70 which OCUK used to stock, and as in my sig hits 4Ghz with a 965 BE (c3) with ease.

lots of choice for you but ultimately get the board that has the features you want and looks how you want it too. Oh and fits your budget!

I wouldn't really want to spend more than 100ish on an AM3 board as the chipsets are old and if you are going to spend so much you're much better off going with the i5 750

Depending on your requirements, I'd go for the M4A79XTD or the M4A785TD-V. Both offer good sets of features and a 3 year warranty. :)

If you're looking to spend a little bit more, then the Crosshair III Formula is a good buy.

err no....AM3 will acommodate all of AMDs new 6 core chips so far from old...

er makes no sense.

AM3 is old so hes better off going with intels socket 1156?

am3 still has an upgrade path AMD hasnt abandoned it , intel however has abdoned the 1156 socket it wont get hex core cpus because its intels ******* stepchild it nolonger wants.

its not the best by any means but im running an unlocked chip as in sig in the biostar ta790gx 128m, around 70 quid and has crossfire, although you will need to flash the bios to unlock, just a thought to put on your list
