AM3 or AM2

hi i have bought a AMD bundle from ****** it comes with a GeForce6100PM-M2 v:3.0 motherboard, 2 gb of DDR2 ram and a AMD atholon II quad core. however i am wanting to buy a new motherboard but i need to find out what socket it is (AM2, AM2+, AM3) i will link a picture of the motherboard if that is any help

Will work in am2 or am3 sockets, as long as its had the correct bios update.

being DDR2 the motherboard could be AM2 or AM2+

but the cpu could be AM2 or AM3 (AM3 is backward compatible)

AM3 motherboards uses ddr3. hence the 3 in AM3

thats a am2+ motherboard.

the cpu is am3.

See the mark on ZIF socket to see which one AM2 or AM3 that would tell you which one as AM2 can run AM2+ or AM3 CPU as backward - if AM3 then it full AM3...

Be very clear about this :

- The CPU is AM3, it supports DDR2 and DDR3 & is backwards compatable with AM2+

- Your current motherboard is AM2+, it must be used with DDR2.

- An AM3 motherboard must be used with DDR3 Ram.

- If you buy an AM3 mothrboard you will also need to change your RAM to DDR3
So unless you want to do that, I would suggest getting an AM2+ motherboard again.
