Hi,

I may have asked this before, however i am going to give this another shot.

I need the white plastic part on a motherboard that locks the cpu into position, mine has cracked and snapped off.

I dont even know what the correct terminology for this part is to do a decent search.

I know that i could buy another motherboard and transplant the part across, but i would rather just try to source the part first off.

Incidentally the motherboard in question is an Msi 790fx-GD70 winki edition, and i feel its a bit too good to throw away or sell as faulty.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Hi zootfloot,

can you contact the store you purchased the board from and ask them politely if they can send you a new Retention Mechanism?

Normally i would do exactly that Big.Wayne, however i purchased the board from OCUK last year and the board was bashed about a bit (very long story) so dont really want to try it on.

The board powers up etc but obviously i would like this little problem sorted before i try to use it.

I know that the socket is a ZIF however searching for that has turned up nothing of relevance.

Anyways, thanks for the reply.

I would still email them and politely ask if they can sort you out, I'm sure they are swimming in spare bits n bobs like that and they are normally quite accommodating to requests like that, they may want paying or they may just make it a kind gesture, certainly wouldn't hurt to ask!

well all your doing is asking them if they have that part, its not like your trying to return the mobo to them under warranty.

even if they point you in the right direction for the part you need better than nothing

correct, have sent a message and hope that it turns up trumps.

Cheers fellas.

I think he is talking about the actual CPU socket (if I remember his previous thread correctly)? If that is the case you will not be able to get a spare one I don't think, were you looking to re solder a new socket on or try and take it apart and just replace the top part that slides between locked/unlocked position.

Indeed i can oblige, and yes i should have posted a picture up first time round...

Just had a message back from a chap at Overclockers who said "Sorry we cannot supply you with that part" so thats another avenue closed.

I think i am going to have to just bite the bullet and either buy a new cheap as possible am3 mobo or a faulty am3 mobo from the bay and do the transplant that way.

Thanks for the help fellas.

i dont really know how the socket works with locking/unlocking/making contact, but it does look like it should work even with a large chunk of the retainer missing. its not like the solid metal pins are suddenly going to go flailing into each other just cos theyre not anchored.

have you tried contacting msi about this? see if theyll send you a new part (theyre probably gonna have thousands of them stacked up somewhere in taiwan...), or if you're lucky, do the repair for you...

I have an AM2 board that went bang recently. Will see If i can pull the (undamaged) white slider off.

EDIT: no-joy, damn things are paper thin. Anyone else trying to pop it off be very very careful as the tinniest flex snapped it.

Pulled one off a dead AM2 board I've got here, drop me a mail in trust and I'll shunt it your way :)

Removal of the current one FWIW:
1. Take off the black surround (4 screws).
2. Flip the catch to vertical.
3. Pull the catch out carefully, should just slide out with a little gentle force. (No retaining mechanism other than a couple of bends)
4. Slip a penknife or similar under the front of the socket and slide sideways slightly. Held on by a little lug mechanism, plenty of flex to remove it though.

Cheers Leezer3, that would be awesome...will send a message to your trust in a second.

I contacted MSI again, apparantly this isnt an item that they just have laying around and they said they wouldnt do a repair on it under warranty (Understandable).

Thanks for the help though guys...knew i could depend on the forumites to come through.
