Setting up a budget gaming rig for a buddy,

Case - Sorted
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H 785G
CPU - AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 6MB Cache Retail Box Processor
CPU Cooler - Freezer 7 Pro
Memory - 4GB DDR3
Hard Drive - Sorted
Graphics - Sorted
Power Supply - Sorted

A few questions:

1. Do all the current X2 555 cpu's have the ability to unlock the extra cores? What's the deal with that?
2. What's a reasonable quick overclock that I should be able to achieve without running prime for 24 hours, doesn't need to be crazy, just a nice little boost I can just apply in the bios when setting it up to have it stable for everyday use and games. (Approx 3.6Ghz reasonable?)
3. Do I need DDR3 memory of a specific voltage for the AM3 board?

Any other pointers, tips etc greatly welcomed as I'm not too familiar with AMD CPU based builds. :)

looks good
but just a hint, there was a thread stating having problems with OCZ gold rams.
not all 555 have the ability to unlock, depends on your luck lol
maybe change the cooler to a titan fenrir?

he could swap the freezer 7 pro with a titan fenrir or akasa venom
then the ocz gold with g.skill ripjaws if he can strech his budget

Pretty tight budget, CPU is pretty set unless anyone says otherwise. RAM is slightly flexible if he needs anything specific. MOBO is the only thing that we're not 100% sure about, he can get that one for £60, unless anyone can suggest any others for any particular reason.

Looks fine UberTiger!

Been using an AMD® 785G myself nearly a year, nay problems but if your mate is gonna keep the system for a few years is SATA 6Gb/s/USB3.0 worth an extra £16? . . . ask him why not :)

Asus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3

£82.99 inc

  1. Unlock is gamble, do you feel lucky punk!
  2. 3.6GHz should be no problem, maybe more (cooling dependant)
  3. Nope, only Intel has special voltage needs!

Cheers for that Big Wayne, just the answers I was looking for! Good point about USB 3.0 will double check with him and probably get that stuff ordered today then :)
