Its mostly to stop thermal paste getting under the ihs can't see it doing anything to help temps.

You would better off getting the Thermalright contact frame.

Thermal right make them too, fairy cheap and as already said, it's just to make cleaning the paste off the CPU a bit easier as it stops it from going down the sides into the grooves.
