Hi folks,

I am looking for a sturdy mobo to go alongside my Ryzen 7700. I haven't received the chip yet and it'll be a while, so I am in no rush. I am looking at broadly the cheapest mobos but I don't really understand the major differencies. For what it is worth I have only had to RMA one board in my life and it was an ASUS P6T SE - so I am a bit anti-ASUS because of that :D

For a basic productivity/casual gaming load - is it worth spending any more and what benefit would I get? No OCing at all.

The lower-end Prime boards usually end up bottom of HUB's charts for thermal performance, so I generally try to avoid them, but I'm sure it'd be fine with a 7700.

The eagle only has 1Gb LAN and these lower-end boards tend to have lots of USB 2 ports on the rear. The eagle does have 3x M.2 slots though, which is nice, even if one only has half the lanes (2 instead of 4).

Note that AX is Gigabyte for WIFI.

Probably not. You get more and higher-spec USB ports. More and higher-spec M.2 slots. PCI-E 5.0 graphics and/or a PCIE 5.0 M.2 (or more). There are also quality of life features like LED postcodes, power/reset buttons on the board, flash BIOS/clear CMOS on the rear. The higher-end boards (like X670E) tend to have higher-spec everything, like a better VRM, 8-layer PCB, lots of USB ports, 4x M.2 slots. X870 has USB4 as standard, though is really just B650E.

Super thank you. I'll compare IO but I don't really have anything plugged in other than mouse/kb. 1GB LAN is fine - I am a decade away from 2.5gb I think!

Am I an idiot for the ASUS issue? ASUS Prime B650 seems fine - and it has the advantage of being available vs. the Gigabyte.

Have a look for yourself:

Note that many of the cheap boards like the Eagle did not exist when this video was made.

Legend thank you!

Edit: 5 mins in and my specific Q answered, lol. Thanks

Hard to look past the Asrock b650m-hdv/m.2 which can be picked up for around 100 quid.
Certainly - seems to keep coming up

Do keep the results in context though, it won't blow up with a 7700, but I think his point is why bother with those when there are boards that don't have these limitations (they were also way pricier when that video was published, whereas they're closer to the actual position now).

Stock seems a bit light on the Asrock B650 vs. the RS model. But the RS is like £50 more. Worth it?

There is a small chance in a decade I'll throw in a faster chip, maybe.

Checkout 650e steel legend. A bit more but decent

My son has a 7800X3D in his with no issues. Worth the £50? depends on your usage I guess, 4 vs 2 DIMM slots, 1 more M.2 and a better VRM seem to be the big differences (and thats the ATX not mATX Pro RS so diffs might be even less?)

In his non-RS model?

Pro RS is a good board, depending on use case, worth the upgrade/money over a HDV/M.2
I've got the 650M in front of me now - annoyingly the Pro RS is now only £20 more, but will delay my fun for 24 hrs :)

You are therefore charged with making a decision for me - should I build this evening or delay by 24hrs for 20? :)
