I'm shortly switching to a 9800X3D from a 12700K. Currently I have custom water but there seems to be a lack of AM5 blocks anywhere. Are people just not bothering with custom water on AM5 due to lower heat? Are AM4 blocks compatible?

AM4 and AM5 share the exact same hole dimensions so most (if not all) water blocks will fit fine. I'm still using the EKWB Quantum Velocity block, yeah the company is trash but the designs are pretty good. Shame, really.

Watercooling stock in general seems to be quite low at the moment. But stuff can be found.

Are most AM4 / AM5 blocks using the included backplate?

I'll take a look around and see what is about. I've used EK lots before but any other brands who are decent?

AM5 boards have a fixed back plate, so it depends on the block. But most will say AM5 compatible, or you'll be able to buy a conversion kit etc.

Most of the manufacturers are decent, I love heatkiller stuff personally. But, I've used cheap Chinese brands like Bykski and Barrow without any issue at all

I have Core 1 paired with 9800x3d. Installation is EASY! It's one of the best performing blocks on the market now
