Hey there,

Haven't been round these parts for a while but I'll have a little bit more time from January 2008 so thought I'd get a brand spankin new pc.

I built my first pc 2 years ago... when I first came on here. It's a Winchester 3500 AMD, geforce nvidia 6800 GT, Asus wireless motherboard deluxe something AGP, 1 gb crucial ballistix, 160 maxtor SATA, 19" illyama CRT, logitech 5.1 Z550 or something, the good ones.

It's now got a bit dodgy, keeps crashing randomly, and the ram seems to need to be replaced every couple of months. I think the harddisk is kinda busted as well, usually works but every now and then is really weird with errors that can only mean corrupt data. It might aslo be the GFX card that overheats and crashes the pc... I really dunno.

Anyway not 100% sure I want to buy this pc now, I may wait until Jan 2008... what do you guys think?

I'm easy on how much I spend as well but I want it to last me a good 2 years at least. Anything up to a grand is fine but the cheaper the better. I'd ideally like to buy at that price where you get best value for money... back in the day it was between geforce 6800gt and geforce 6800X or something and the latter was double the price but just a bit faster. I went with the former... hope you get the gist.

Also I'm an AMD boy. Dunno if they still cain but preferably an AMD PC pls.

I'm not sure I'll bother buying new speakers or a monitor as I'm very happy with them.

Spec away and thanks in advance.

You didnt specifically say what its for, so this is just a spec that id consider good value to performance ratio.

Not sure if you need OS or any other peripherals too.

The case is a well recommended one, but personally im not fond of the looks, and would prefer an antec 182, but thats easily changed.

Also, wait till you actually have time to use it, prices only drop and technologys only getting better, buying a computer to have it just waste away is...well a waste :p

It'll be mainly used for games. What else is a PC good for :P?

Fair point about waiting but I'll still use it loads just not as much as I'd like (i.e. all the time) until the New year.

I think I'll have to get an OS... I have windows XP pro which I can install but should I get Vista? I've heard its rubbish tough so don't know.

Thanks for the spec, I'll check it out in detail when I get home tonight.

XP tends to be better performing for current generation gaming, if your planning to get 4gb ram+ in the future youll need vista 64bit too(unless you have xp 64bit that is).

Id stick with your copy of XP untill they improve vista to be honest, no sense replacing xp if it isnt broken, theres no massive difference between them.

You sound just like me, I built my first machine a few years ago and had almos tthe exact same spec lol!

I have just ordered a rig for £1000. Take a look at the post I made, people have helped with some usefull comments etc.

Hopefully will be of some use to you as well.

*Dont miss the part about the Hard Drive*

EDIT: Just thought, you guys have to pay VAT......weak lol. This setup can still be done for a grand i think if you drop 2gb of ram..... also if your willing to wait, it should arrive soon and i can report back to see if there are any issues with it and vista 64

Aye, XP performs better, but if you're wanting to play DX10 games, unfortunately, off to Vista you go :(

I'd change the harddrive in Davids spec to a 500GB WD AAKS one. The AAKS are very good and perform almost as quickly as a Raptor and faster then any other 7200RPM drive.

Everything else though looks top notch. You could go with the Lian Li PC-7 case to save some money and get the cost below £1K but other then that it gets a big thumbs up from me for fitting in a GTX and a quad core into 1K.

Yeh probably should have said vista will probably be better for next generation games/ DX10, but i did say the opposite (though vaguely).

Though even most next generation games will be directx9 compatible for a good while yet.
