Hi,
Can't decide what one to buy. Either a Amazon fire or a chrome cast?

If I plug either one into my amp will I get surround sound?

Hi

I have both and I'd also recommend the Fire over the Chromecast
The remote, XBMC and the occasional casual game are real benefits over the Chromecast

Rather than making a new thread, thought I would ask here.

I am considering buying an Amazon Fire TV Stick and want to know if I can seamlessly play files that are stored on my Synology NAS without having to spend too much time setting things up.

I don't particularly fancy spending a long time installing things or messing with my NAS, ideally I would just like plug and play.

Anybody had any experience?

The native player on both devices does not bitstream DTS, but then again no content for them is encoded in such a way.

Kodi on the fire does. I tested it and it worked really well.

The only issue I saw, and it was a no-go for me, is that neither device supports 24p playback. 24p video from Kodi off my fire tv wasn't very smooth in panning shots.

Just something to bear in mind. Completely boggles the mind why they don't support it. The Fire only supports 50hz/60hz.

One from me - which works best with Netflix?

Do they both do 1080p streaming and is the interface snappy and quick? Bloody awful on my virgin TiVo.

FireTV for Netfilx. Has a dedicated app with quick interface. With Chromecast your basically play Netflix on your phone/tablet and have to "Cast" it on to the TV so it it's not a application loaded on to the Chromecast.

My gf's flatmates have a chromecast, and I have to say I'm not impressed with it, always flakey. It'd be Fire Stick for me.

Well im looking at ordering something that has the option to play my 30gig MKV's at 24p and can install kodi the fire and chromecast do not do 24p. I was looking at a NUC but then you are looking to spend near £400 just for that to happen. The cheaper NUC's won't be quick enough and fast enough to play 1080 and will struggle looks like im stuck with WD LIVETV at the moment unless theres other options

So if you buy the Plex app for the Fire Stick, then you can run everything through it without needing a phone/tablet? And it works just as well / better than Chromecast?

That sounds quite tempting, though I'd like ethernet support as well.

Err...buy a small HTPC? They will play your files fine, mine does.
