Does Anyone have one? What are your thoughts?

I use Plex and Kodi a lot, I also would like to start streaming a handful of games to my tv in the living room via moonlight/Nvidia software.

I was gonna buy the new firestick for £30 but came across the box and read it was better fro streaming games and the latest version gives you 4k capability. I don't have a 4 k tv but nice to know its there when i eventually do upgrade.

I was going to buy one this month, to stream movies from our Mezzmo server as it supports H.265 decoding, and the TV doesn't. Curious what other people's opinions are too. Looking at the Box as it as a wired ethernet port Vs Wifi on the dongle.

Wasn't sure how it compared to a Roku 4.

The hardware on the FireTV Gen 2 is fairly sound and more than good enough for Plex/Kodi/SPMC. It is particularly good, obviously, if you buy into the Amazon ecosystem (Prime and Echo etc.) It is however a little hampered by some of Amazon's slightly odd Hardware connectivity choices, it only has HDMI 1.4 so is limited to 2160p30, to view 4K content on Prime it still requires HDCP2.2, it is incapable of HDR even though Amazon are pushing an HDR streaming service. The Ethernet port is also only 100 Mbit/s not Gigabit.

There are rumours of a new FireTV box based on the AML S905 SoC with HDMI 2 and HDR capability just around the corner but these are just rumours with no hard facts at the moment.

Run a games emulator on one too.. I can play snes, nes, playstation games etc on my firetv 2 using the game controller. Runs great.

We have 2 Amazon Fire TVs, one of the 4K ones and one of the original ones.

We only use one now upstairs, I use the apps on my KS7000 in the living room as the Fire TV 4K can't do HDR.

I love them though, used Acer Revos for years with Kodi previously. As soon as Fire TV came out I switched, meant I could have Kodi, Plex, Amazon, Netflix and YouTube all in one place. I don't use Kodi anymore though.

I'd say wait. Can't be long until they release a HDR version, especially with Amazon pushing it online.

still no dates though, as commented recently (mightyten) in other similar threads,
have to look when they start to unload the older version or are there other indicators ?,
maybe they have production problems,or were caught out by not having utube Vp9.2 hardware support.

That article mentions that its usually around October time. I'm hoping that there's still a new Fire TV with HDMI2 at the same time as the 'Fire Stick 4k' that appears to be what the link above suggests.
