I tried one out for the first time yesterday. Picked up 3 items without scanning any of them, then went to the check out where you scan a phone from your app and then the barrier opens.

What is this sorcery?!!?

Also, my bank have declined the transaction and i have tried to make payment 3 times but they all decline. I use the card daily for travel so i'm not sure what the issue is there..
How long before i Jeff Bezos knocks on my door?

Not in a million years. I'll support something in my local community, or at least provides jobs for people.

Unfortunately this proves automation. will ensure retail staff will become obsolete in the near future. I rarely interact with an employee now anyway with the barcode scanner unless buying age restricted products.

Yep, sad but true. Will prices reflect the lack of employment costs? I doubt it tbh.

We have one locally but I've never been in. I shop on Amazon but the idea of buying fresh/prepared from them just seems wrong.

Besides the fact we have a lovely family grocers we use weekly, a good butchers etc.

Automation at the check out...the actual store still requires the same number of staff as any other to fill the shelves, at least for anything that isn't an easy to handle shape, and to deal with any issues on the shop floor.

IIRC South Korea and Japan have been trying all sorts of ways to reduce staff numbers "on the shop floor" for years and Amazon fresh is basically applying a similar method here.
