Hi guys. I'm getting the "Stupid low temps" that you get out of AMD sometimes (13c on all six cores for example) and it's making overclocking tough because I have no idea where I am really at.

I'm also running a very old DDR2 board (but it does have 8 phases so is very good for clocking) so I need a CPU temp monitor that's honest.

Any ideas? I'm using HWMON but right now as I say the temps are stupid low. Like 30c under primed overclocked...

Hw monitor it should show cpu/socket temp under one of the tmpin and the stupidly low temp will be the core package, which is an algorithm thats reliable once over 40c.

If you are using an am2 board is this an am2+ board?

There's core temps and another sensor called something like 'temp in 1'. If you have that, it's usually about 10*C above the core temps. It's towards the top in hardware monitor.

It's an Asus M3A32 MVP Deluxe Wifi.

Try saying that when you've had a few beers :D

:p You'll be ok with board but i'm not sure how strong the ht ref is on it,
but for 14 x 250 it should be easy to get 3.5ghz with cpu-nb multi of 9 or 10.
What memory do you have?

My old ga-ma770ud3 managed 312.

It's Hynix generic DDR2 667 but the seller assures me it will do 800. It doesn't really matter because I can easily set the ram to run at the correct speed.

I think right now I have 3.4ghz with the HT running 2400? something like that. I know that to go higher I am going to have to lower the HT because apparently most boards won't do any higher.

I've seen plenty of cases of this board hitting 280+ easily on the bus, so it will be whatever the chip does with the multi at around that I would think. Unless of course the lowest memory speed in the divider becomes too high at that bus for the ram to be ran at the correct speeds.

I'm currently giving it 1.4v. I don't think any higher is sensible for the cooler I have. I mean, it's a decent cooler, but I certainly wouldn't go near 1.5v with it.

Yeah the old thubans tended to have better imc for 1866 support and normally could manage 2600-3000 on both ht and cpu-nb. But in this case we are on an am2+ and ddr2. go on give it juice if it needs it :p

Well after reading about how these chips can quite easily take 1.6v I decided to use 1.5v as my absolute maximum. I don't really want to take the NB over 2400 (HT I assume..) and so I have just given the CPU 1.5v and then slowly rise the FSB, allowing for the HT divider.

Is where I am at with the NB running around 2300mhz and the memory 700 or so. There is one memory setting lower, which translates to around 590. *IF* I can hit 280 on the FSB then the memory should come in right around 690-720 which should run OK, allowing me 3.9odd ghz.

I have absolutely no clue about the rest, IE HT voltage and so on so I have left all of that on Auto for now.

I really don't want to rag it to within an inch of its life because there's no point really. Am installing 3dmark right now which will be a complete farce on this GPU but really just want to see the physics score if it will allow me to with only 1gb ram in the board right now..

I had 4x1gb 800mhz Dominators. Only problem was they don't fit under the cooler so I had to snap down three of them so they would. However, you need to completely remove the cooler to get them in and I CBA. Especially given that I got frustrated yesterday and tried to remove the coolers completely and ended up ripping off an entire side of ram :D

So now I am down to 3gb... I think I will just see if it runs and if not I will resume play when the 8gb arrives hopefully tomorrow..

It's responding well to voltage, what are the temps,
Not teaching you to suck eggs but keep the memory, ht and nb down low like you are
and hit the ht ref first (fsb) to see what cpu can do.

The ht link in that pic is showing 1060 (4x 265) are you able to increase it in the bios to 8x? as you are currently at half stock speed. The nb is 2120 (8x 265) could be increased to 9x with 265 ht ref. You may need to bump the cpu-nb up from 1.175v when over 2400.

Yeah it's down clocking. The NB speed is reported at 2200 or so ATM.

I just put in the Mars GPU and it BSOD. So I moved it down to 3.67ghz and it seems OK. Am trying to run Firestrike, but it's taking forever to install .net. Probably because I am only using 1gb ram lol.

I ran it at 3.8 for most of its life with a modest volt increase, be interesting to see how much ddr2 effects you.

I can't get it there. I had it stable at 3.78ghz but as soon as I fitted the GPU (Mars 760) it BSOD. So I dropped to 3.6 and it still BSOD so I am now running it around 3.5.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/9680776?

There's a Firestrike run with 3.6. Oddly it wasn't crashing during benchmarks or anything else just at desktop. However, I still only have 1gb ram in there so the fact it's able to even function with that and Win 8 is quite remarkable lol.

What's odd is that by dropping to 3.5 the benchmark scores are nearly identical.

I'm hoping the ram comes today but it will more likely be Monday.

Edit. The BSOD were also not OC related it would seem. They were something to do with drivers. However, since I downed the clock speed they have stopped. Problem is I installed Win8 and all it wants to sodding do now is cripple itself downloading updates..
