Just bought the ASUS 290x only to read on the box that it requires at least 750w psu.

I purchased relatively recently a corsair rm 650w. It has the dual type 3 pcie cables so thought i would be ok. With my OC in place and 6 hds and ssd i was getting black screens soon after boot up.

I have been forced to disable my ram oc from 2400 to 1333mhz the hard drives don't seem to affect it.

Would this be expected that i would need at least 750w if i want to OC my ram and cpu and run 290x? I am thinking of getting a 850w.

I would definitely go up cause your not leaving enough headroom for your other hardware a 750 watt should be fine, but while you have the opportunity i would go further cause you might one day think about crossfire, and have to think again about another PSU. Or for now you could pull a couple of drives and lower your overclock till you decide.

What are your full system specs?

The Corsair unit should be enough to power the system and card.

With my overclcocked i7 system with custom water and the MSI 290X LE card I get around 360w whilst gaming from the mains.

Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H
QuadCore Intel Core i5-4670K, 3400 MHz (34 x 100)
2x Kingston HyperX KHX2400C11D3/4GX 4 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM
Corsair CM650
6xSATA
1xCrucial_CT512MX100SSD1 (476 GB)
dell u2412m 1920x1200 over display port

Usually I will up the ram voltage to 1.65 and put it on 2400mhz. The cpu i would oc to about 3.8ghz 100x38. I tried taking all the SATA out and running ssd+overclock and it black screens. Removing the OC and leaving it on optimised defaults is only way i can not get it to black screen. It plays fine when its not black screening though, was playing bf4 etc.

I solved it by running the card in its lower state, it was set to high performance with the jumper switch which makes the card go to 1050/1350. By switching it to silent mode, 1000/1250 it now works with the OC and hard drives. :)

I only get about 550W max usage on my 7970 crossfire setup with everything OC to the max. Are you sure the 290X takes more power than that?
Try getting one of those plugin power meters to see actual usage at the wall. Your single card system should not be taking more 450W max (300W peak for 290X, 150W for system)

edit: Unless the 12V rail on your psu is not enough of course.

I run a R9 290 Trix-X OC + i7 4790 + 16GB (2400) + mx100 SSD + 1TB WD drive on a SuperFlower 650W PSU. I dont overclock anything but its been rock solid for over 6 months with lots of gaming.

Its been running fine for over a day now. Played bf4 for many hours without any problems. This is with a 3.8ghz oc and 2400mhz xmp profile 1 setting.

I might try stick it back on performance mode and see if it black screens again.
