So i currently game at 1440P on a Dell 27" monitor, looking at a G-Sync monitor and with the current price drop on the 980TI, i cannot decide if i should get the 980TI or the 1070 (wait and see for the 1080 etc price drop)

I have a £100 voucher for OCUK so was thinking either of these

£430 (£330) EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 8192MB GDDR5

£360 (£260) EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti FTW ACX 2.0+ 6144MB GDDR5

worth getting the 980 for now and wait and see about the 1080, 1080TI etc..?

1070 is a little faster than the 980ti. However, the 1070 will continue to see improvements with drivers, whereas the 980ti won't. Of the two, I'd get the 1070.

By far and away the biggest question here is do you need to upgrade? Stuff is only going to get cheaper. If your 290x is struggling then upgrade, if not...........don't.

When the 1080ti is dropped I'd hope for a good price drop all round TBH.

1070 over the 980TI. But I would consider getting the Freesync monitor now and enjoying that while you wait a few months to see what Vega is like. I suppose it's a gamble as Vega could be a let down, but I expect it to be competitive with a 1070 or 1080 at least.

I think Vega will definitely be competitive with Pascal, at the very least with 1070 & 1080 if not Titan X-P. Hell, even the Fury X is doing work now, especially for DX12&Vulkan and those are clearly going to be more prominent going forward.

I think that's a touch optimistic. I think it'll beat a 1070 and then spark the eternal argument over which card is better, 1080 or vega.

How about getting a FreeSync monitor and sticking with your current card??

I have thought about doing that, but there isn't a load of choice, not to mention it would be nice for all games to work, all be in the odd one that doesn't, first one being hero's and generals

other things such as The Division at 1440p, 30-45fps out in the open spaces, between 45-60 fps inside, BF4 is around 75 with Mantle, but again dips to 45-50 in heavy combat

WoW doesn't seem to like my card currently with 30-45 fps, CS:GO is up and down etc..

Not to mention when gaming my PC sounds like a hoover when the fans kick in full tilt on the GPU

Whats your CPU, because half the games you refer to, are CPU heavy.

The 290X should be doing far better in WoW and CS GO, but both of those or horrifically CPU dependant.

The only way the 290X should be getting that low in WoW, is if you were in a new invasion area with over 80 people duking it out with NPCs. That can bring my system as low as 28 for brief periods.

No way should you be topping out around 45, I have guild members with 960s and 380Xs that get double that.

I agree with what you are saying. I have just upgraded to a 1070 from a 390 and I am glad I did.

I love amd hardware and have a freesync monitor but I wasn't happy with the performance going from 1080p to 1440p.

I would have taken a fury x but the 4gb vram wasn't worth it imo. I prefer the extra 30 or so fps over the lower frame rate with freesync which is a surprise.

At the end of the day it's up to you. I did order a 980ti but cancelled it before it shipped as it felt like I was buying old tech considering the 1070 wasn't too much more.

I had a msi 390 which was a fantastic card so I went with the msi 1070 gaming x which is even better as it's lighter, faster, cooler and uses a less power and is so quiiet, I can barely hear it.

I did go a little over budget but I knew it would be worth it in the long run. :)

Agreed,sounds like some CPU limitation??

Unless you want to improvements in DX11 titles like GTA V, Fallout 4 etc get a 980Ti but frankly I would keep with what you have for now. The 290X/390X range are really now showing what they can do with titles that are running the latest API's and with more and more games coming out running DX12 and Vulkan you will most likely find your card is capable of running these games at decent FPS and settings for a while longer.

Wait and see what Vega and Pascal brings.
