hmm, is it ?

i got a feeling it is but i cant be sure, its stock clocks as im no expert in oc'ing.
i have an asrcok sata dual (pcie and agp) 939.

should i get an upgrade as soon as i can? would it make much diffence and what would i have to get to get a dotticable differnce?

also would i be better just to get another cooler and some new ram ( i have oooold ram and its 1gb)

so new cpu ?
new cpu cooler?
or new ramm (2gb) - makes and names + links plz

Hey

Yes it is slightly holding back your x1800xt.. I have a A64 3400+ and also the x1800xt... my cpu is slightly bottlenecking the card.

I wouldnt of thought though there would be a massive increase in performance.. will be more noticable with 3Dmark scores than frames per sec :)

oh right, i have a asrock sata dual, i heard its hard to oc' with them

but if it can be done a few tips would be very cool

I overclocked my 3200+ venice on an asrock dual sata2 in 5 minutes, i also have an ATI X1800xt 256mb !

And 1gb geil value ram.

With my cpu clocked to 2.5, my 3d mark went from 3800 something to 4100 something. Cant remember exact digits but thats around correct !

It was my first overclock to, if you want i could write down all the settings i used to overclock.

I have the same card and same GPU... it's definitely bottlenecking.

I was thinking of upgrading to an X2 4400+ - each core is .2GHz faster and has double the cache (ie. it's a dual 3700+)... should see an improvement.

You will see an improvement but not twice the performance as most software doesnt utilise DC yet. And for gaming, dual core (apart from Conroe) as no real benefits.

And how did you get to that conclusion, the vast majority of modern games are massively GPU dependant and run no slower or quicker using faster CPU's.
RTW works the cpu very hard but at the end of the day its the GFX card that does the most work.
I couldnt notice the difference in games using a heavily OCed 7800gtx (520/1.38) with my 3700SD running t either 2.2 or 2.65 so i doubt your bottleneck is the CPU.
going from 1 to 2 gig of RAM makes far more difference.
PS
Double the cache is worth about an extra 200mhz on you clock

pegasus, his cpu is the bottleneck, the 3dmark results would speak for themselves
3dMark isnt real world performance and he hasnt even stated what he uses his PC for. If he is playing FEAR at 1600x1200 then that CPU will not be the bottleneck , alex2zulu, you need to give us a little more detail on what you use you rig for.

i use it for gaming, all the time....like every day. i play efar, all the bf games mostly bf2, X3, doom3, warhammer games

but mostly fear. i plan on getting prey.
hope that helps

You really havnt explained what your CPU is. Is it the 32bit 3200XP (cant remember the core name etm) or the A64. If it the 32 bit version then yes the CPU is definitely bottlenecking.

Look at his 1st post, he says skt 939 NOT skt A so its an A64.

Ok, so we've gathered your 3200 is running at stock speeds, so clocking that will help. What clocks is your x1800 running at, stock or clocked?? Also you say you have 1gig of old ram, what speed is that, 333, 400??? Finialy what res are you playing at??
Just changing a cpu won't give you that big of a gain in games, but tweaking and playing with a few things can help greatly. As stated above 2gig of ram would probably help more than a new cpu. FEAR and BF2 run loads better with extra ram.

I think i have the same problem too, i have a A64 3700clawhammer and have a 6800GT @ stock. But if i oc the card i get no real difference. Ive just raised the fsb to 204 and seen 3 fps increase in the CS:S stress test lol Is there a guide or link someone could put up that might help me oc my pc?

I used to oc my last pc with easytune 4 the n00b version lol that came with my old gigyabyte mb, but my new dfi one didnt have anything like that.
Any help would be great thanks.

EDIT: sorry just found the link in the oc section, im such a n00b
