Hi there,

I'm considering swapping out my Athlon 4000+ for a 4800x2 (socket 939) as a short term upgrade until I go back to Intel in a couple of months. I understand that the 4000+ is marginally faster that the 4800 x 2 in games but that the dual core chip is faster in multi-tasking. I often watch tv whilst browsing etc., and my Nebula TV card is a bit of a CPU hog.

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

Thanks for your attention.

This is what I plan to do also, currently running a 3200+ though, so I should notice some difference even in games. I see it as a half decent stop gap to a full Conroe upgrade down the line.
Im just waiting for the price of the 4800 x2 to drop <£200 but something tells me they are likely to sell out before this happens :(

Am I allowed to advertise that I have a 4800x2 for sale in the MM?

Doesnt say anything about it in the MM FAQ so I'll go ahead and post this :)

Dons please remove if not allowed. The post...not my account ;D

TBH if you already have the 4000 I would save your cash until you can go full conroe if thats the way you want to go £200 will buy you a good clocking E6600 I know the rest of the upgrade will pinch but at the moment I think intel is the way to go......

I myself never made the jump to an x2 amd I had an fx57 which would out do a lot of duel core rigs so unless you are full time encoding etc I would not bother but thats my 2 pence

Tbh your 4000+ should cope with that, I can run a movie fullscreen in Intervideo while playing a game with only a little stutter every now and then and run TV while browsing np at all.

Only problem there is I dont have access to MM yet  but im trying my hardest...

If you want stop gap cpu and overclock, get a 4400+ or even a 3800+. They overclock at least as well as a 4800+ and don't cost as much.

Thanks for the replies. On balance, I don't think I'll bother with changing my CPU for now. I was thinking of spending a couple of hundred quid or so on a stopgap and probably uneconomical upgrade.

Wonder if I should swap out my BFG 7800 GT OC for a 7950 GT?

In Quite a few benchmarks I have seen the 7800GT Is better, or almost as good as the 7950GT, Save your money untill DX10 cards come out :)
