Got a s939 gigabyte k8nxp-9 mobo with a amd 4400+ dual core and 1 gig of ram, could someone please advise me on bios settings as it is not as fast as i would have thought,by the way it is'nt overclocked.

What do you mean isn't as fast? Was this a fresh install? Are you doing heavy CPU multitasking, or just light work?

You need to do music/video encoding plus gaming to make a dual core CPU worthwhile. Winamp, OE and Opera browsing doesn't require dual core CPU and you won't notice the difference from a single core of identical speed (in this case 3700) btw I have a 4400X2 and 3700+ and the difference is obvious, when using several CPU intensive processes.

i just do light work,i upgraded from a 3500+ and there is no difference wotsoever and someone told me to check the settings in my bios,i know that none of the settings in the bios have been touched as i just plonked the 4400+ in and away it ran.

Well since you don't do heavy work, then you're not going to see the increase in speed with dual core machine. My 3700+ is nippy enough in Windows but only when doing light use or only one heavier use app in one instance, it slows down to crawl when that application is high priority mode, plus want to do something else. A few games use dual core, but the biggest improvement in speed is multiple applications all using CPU cycles at the same time. It's possible if you're upgraded windows hasn't detected the second core. When you open Task Manager do you the graphs like this? (this is from my X2 machine)

If yours is running, try shrinking music plus playing a game at the same time. Then try in on the 3500.

Yeah all running great in that dept, most of the bios settings are set to auto.Does this sound correct.

Yes, and as said above, you're not going to see much benefit with your usage. You'll notice the difference if you run a heavy task like video encoding, and then go to do other things whilst this is still going on, it will be a lot more responsive. If you went from a similar speed single core processor (ie 2Ghz to 2Ghz per core), with your usage, you're very unlikely to get much benefit.

hmm I noticed a large difference going from a 3700+ to a 4400 x2.

But if you do light work then what are you expecting it to do?
